Has anyone else ever set themselves on fire with an aquarium light?

My squirrel fish went on a murderous rampage. The tank sitter sent me a pic of it eating my cardinal... Sorry for the poor quality.

When you're talking about Reef keeping or the Hobby in general how do you explain it to others who aren't into reefing?

Tang Fighting with Clownfish

Posted: 27 Nov 2019 02:40 PM PST

I'm not really looking for help, I just felt like sharing my frustration. So, we added Pixel, a convict tang, to our 90g over a month ago. The tank already had a firefish, four pyjama cardinalfish, and three Ocellaris clownfish. The firefish and pyjamas didn't trust him at first, but they got used to him pretty quickly. As for the clowns, they just ignored him. He'd annoy the female and the runt occasionally, which resulted in gentle nips and posturing from them.

Fast forward to this week, and I find my big female clownfish, Delilah, with a split fin. Who's to say how it happened. Then, yesterday, I was watching Pixel and I spotted two Delilah-sized tooth impressions on his side. They were reminiscent of those recreated Megalodon shark jaws. Now, Delilah is not an aggressive fish by any means. She's never bitten us before, and when she's bossing around the boys, she's always careful not to injure them. Pixel had to have done something really stupid to have forced her to bite him.

The two of them have been getting into fights ever since, and I think Pixel's the aggressor. He's constantly going into the harem's territory, but the clowns never say anything to him and just ignore him. However, the other night he got really weird with Delilah. He turned all dusky, his stripes turned pale, and he kept flashing his switchblade at her. This lasted for at least 5 seconds. Then, earlier this afternoon, we heard splashing sounds and looked over to see Delilah right at the surface of the tank, her head nearly out of the water, and Pixel very agitated, circling her and threatening her with his switchblade.

I know we've only had him a month, but he's never been aggressive before. He's always just swam around the tank, nibbling on things and visiting the other fish before darting off again. Now he's been picking fights with Delilah, and has even been chasing the pyjamas.

The only thing we've changed was that we added a gyre to the tank, and we've cut down on the amount of nori we've been feeding him. I'm going to increase his nori feedings, add some different feeding stations, and move the clownfishes' "host" (they've been hosting with one of those magnetic algae scrapers). I don't know what triggers these fights, but hopefully these changes will fix the problem. I think part of the problem might also be that he sometimes spots his reflection, which makes him upset.

What's your preferred way of dosing Ca and alkalinity? Do you dose separately or, like Rick Astley, "together forever and never two-part"?

Red bugs? Coral id? Gifted coral. You can guess what store they went to :/ but it’s the thought that counts!
