Work in progress, but it’s coming together. I recently moved and decided to combine my 36 bow front and 40 breeder into one 75 gallon.

After over a year with the 10s I’m finally upgrading. Very excited to have a nice scape after collecting so many ideas from here.

Hello PlantedTank peoples. I've been lurking here for a few weeks. Many years ago I was a major fishkeeper. At one point I had 13 different aquariums in my tiny little apartment. Then life happened. Career. Wife. Kids. Etc.

Well I'm now divorced, and I decided it was time to teach my kids the hobby. We came upon a 16gal bowfront with stand, and I thought it would be great to explore the planted side of the hobby, with just a few friendly occupants. So my kids and I setup the tank and got it cycled. I've been cruising my local craigslist for driftwood, as well as all of my LFS.

Yesterday I saw a Craigslist post for a beautiful 125 gallon tank. The ad mentioned that he had some driftwood with Anubias attached. I emailed him and let him know that his tank was gorgeous, but outside my budget, and I really just wanted his driftwood.

This morning I got a text from him. Movers are coming today, and if I could get there by 1 pm, not only could I have the driftwood, but he would gift me the entire setup, as he didn't want it to go to a thrift store, and he hadn't had any buyers.

WOW! Thank you Craigslist poster. So I went and picked up the equipment and it's immaculate. The gentleman definitely enjoyed the hobby. So here's the specs.

125 Gallon tank

Fluval FX4 Canister Filter (700GPH)

Finnex digital heater (temperature controlled to the degree)

Finnex Planted+ 24/7 LED Lights (2)

So now I'm reaching out to the community for your thoughts. I'd like to setup a Low Tech Planted aquarium. Looks like I have the filtration and lighting that I need to do some beautiful growth.

The real question is, what substrate should I use? Should I layer it? I recognize that nutrient-rich substrate for a tank this large is going to be very expensive.

Thanks in advance for all the assistance!
