Should I go ahead and add water to tank

Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:04 PM PST

Tank is 120 gallons. So I'm using two smaller hang on back filters then getting a big canister filter but that won't come in for a few weeks. But should I go ahead and add the gravel and water then let one of the small hang on back filters start running already. Only one though because the other small hang on back filter is filtering the tank my fish is in.

Just to clarify I'm not adding the fish in the big tank I'm waiting till much later to do that.

Help. Sinking swollen fishie

Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:54 AM PST

Hey folks.

I have a few fancy goldfish in a 29 gallon (I know, we will need a bigger tank in time). One of my favorite fish friends has been unable to swim for three days now. She is swollen and just stays on the bottom. She tries to swim but can't. There is discoloration around her face/gills (she is albino but she has become even paler/her gills look pinkish).

Whenever she tries to swim, she immediately sinks to the bottom. Almost like she is a stone being dropped in to the tank.

Her scales aren't sticking out so it doesn't seem like dropsy, but it also doesn't seem quite like swim bladder.

Any ideas?

Should I just give up?

I feel totally defeated. My goldfish has had this illness that causes ulcers one day, leaves the next, then comes back in different spots. It's been going on for over a full year now, but it seemed comepletely gone during the summer. Ive asked this sub only to have no clear answers. No medicine has been able to cure it. I thought I had the best luck with Prazipro since all the symptoms seemed to be leaning to skin flukes, but it ended up coming back worse then ever after 2 weeks. I tried salt baths in a hospital tank for a few days, I've tried Seachem Polyguard in the hospital tank for the reccomended time. I was made to believe that the PraziPro should be done in the normal tank with no filter, so I did, but during that time the water turned very cloudy due to no filter and now the whole tank just looks bleak and depressing.

My goldfish seems to want to live, but I don't know what else to try, and I'm running out of money because of it. Should I keep trying or is it not worth it? This has been a really big weight on my shoulders every time i look at the tank, making me not want to look at how bad it is because I know I can't help.

As of right now, the water is fine with all the tests coming back good except the nitrate has always been a little bit on the higher side at around 5.0-10ppm on average, and I haven't found a way to lower it at all (My tap water is the same ppm). My fish is a comet alone in a 45 gallon with I hope plenty of aeration and a good filter. I did get in a mini depression a few months ago where i only changed about 10 gallons with new water, but i usually do 25% and 50% regularly. And I wish I can have a bigger tank or preferably a pond, but I literally dont have space, time, or money to handle anything bigger than a 45gal.

Help: Planted Goldfish Tank

Posted: 28 Nov 2019 03:23 AM PST

If you look at my uploaded videos and pics you'll see I am keeping potted plants. However, I really miss the look of a fully planted tank. I got especially inspired by an old tank from Green Mountain Goldfish:

Picture of her old tank

So it seems like she used to use some kind of aquascaping plant substrate/soil, like this one here:

Substrate

So I wonder, do you guys think this kind of substrate would work with goldfish? I was thinking to try the fast growing anacharis to save money and see how it goes.
