Wild Crayfish Rescued From Quickly Drying River -- URGENT

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:14 PM PST

Hi Guys. I was just at my local river and it was sadly drying very quickly. There were hundreds of fish flopping around dying before my eyes. I rescued 10-15 crayfish and I now have them in a horse trough (no horses) with some large rocks and a chunk of brick for cover. What do I do?????

Edit: I gave them a little bit of shrimp and frozen peas to eat so they don't become carnivorous. Was that the right thing to do?

Questions Questions Questions

I'm getting a 40 gallon long and I always wanted a crayfish but I love live aquatic plants, originally I didn't think it be a problem but through reaserching for a while it sounds like they are natural plant destroyers.

Is there anyway I could like make the plants unreachable by one? Like a large pot with a little garden in it high enough for it to be left alone yet below the surface of the water...

Are they good at climbing smooth surfaces? Would one actively seek away to eat the plants if he or she was already fed well?

Away from main topic, but do crayfish have different personalities? Should I provide away for them to leave the water to the surface or do only certain species need to ever go above water?

If you have a answer to any of these please share! Thank you in advance!
