All the shrimp were completely inactive, not even grazing. Turns out pH was waaay too high. This is 5 minutes after I put in a pH7 block. Lil zoomers

Shrimp death after water changes

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 06:33 PM PDT

I have read up on some forums about this already but would still love some more opinions. I have a fairly new 5 gallon shrimp Walstad tank (about a month old) that I have introduced 8-10 shrimp to. I didn't add any shrimp until the nitrite/nitrate levels were zero.

Currently in the tank I have some neocaridina as well as ghost shrimp and no other livestock. I have not lost any of the shrimp with the exception of within 24 hours of performing a water change. Every time I have done a water change (4 times now) I've lost at least one shrimp by the next night. I started troubleshooting by reducing my water change volume down to about 5% but still had the issue. Most recently I had planned to just ditch the water change completely, but topped off the volume that evaporated, and still had a death right after.

I've been trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong here or if there are any red flags. I'm going to stop doing water changes all together for the time being but I will have to top the tank off again at some point. I'm adding api dechlorinator and trying my best to match the temperatures. Nitrite/nitrate are zero and shrimp have seemed healthy and active otherwise. I don't believe new pipes should be an issue.

What would be the best place to find shrimp?

Curious, because I know my local petco has some, but I'm wondering if I could get some for a better price, and I'm not sure how petco treats their shrimp.

Will capped aquasoil (Amazonia or Stratum) buffer my water?

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 04:15 PM PDT

I have a tank with decorative sand substrate that needs more buffering capacity. Should I replace it with aquasoil and carpet plants or cap the aquasoil so I can keep my original design?
