I went to aquashella, my first aquarium convention

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:33 PM PDT

I had a blast! Honestly I was surprised how many coral enthusiasts there are. I have gone most of my life without meeting other people that really have fish tanks, let alone saltwater. There was a line and people shoulder to shoulder in some places.

I was really happy at the variety and quality of the corals everyone was selling. There were some that advertised their super rare and specifically named coral for a lot of money, but most seemed really well priced. Also a reminder, dip your coral. I had a lot of hitch hikers.

I spent my budget of $350 on a mix of about 12 corals. A few zoas, a Xenia frag for my angler tank, a chalice, two unknown acros, frogspawn, a hammer, 2 acans, a favia, and a plate coral that did not like the drive home it seems.

There is so much more I want to try for next time. My goal was to get more sps, but there was just a wonderful and bigger variety of everything else. I can't stress how great the prices were. One thing that I find so gross about the hobby is how much people want for everything (including retailers like LEDs and etc).

I did not expect so much to be there and I didn't budget my time for everything like the public appearances. I was there for about 3.5 hours but I wish I took more time. I had a 3 hour drive unfortunately though so it was tough. I did get to meet the YouTuber George (I think he set it up). He held the door for me and I awkwardly shook his hand and forgot any of the things I would have wanted to say. If you're reading this, I had the weird Hawaiian fish shirt on.

I don't know how much to say without spoilers for the event (they said to not share) but they did a wonderful job setting everything up.

Questions on a new to me tank

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:43 PM PDT

So here's the gist of it.

I'm buying a tank from a friend that simply doesn't have the time to care for it. It's an innovative marine 20 peninsula, with stand, heater, light, and pump, and coralife t5 2bulb fixture, and is running with tap water not rodi.(I know I know) Has maybe a lb of live rock and a lionfish. The tank is an innovative marine peninsula 20

To my best knowledge, I know of zero lionfish that are ok in a 20 gallon long aquarium, correct me if I'm wrong.

The tank is dirty, but not old so the damage is minimal. As of right now I plan on rehoming the lionfish, scraping the glass and then doing a massive waterchange replacing as much as possible with rodi water. I'd like to then add more live rock, since it's currently cycled and the parameters aren't awful, surprisingly, and add one or 2 clowns, likely just one, to keep the tank rolling, And monitor for a few weeks.

This is my first saltwater tank for personal use but have a history of maintaining several much larger (250+gal) saltwater tanks for a couple years so I'm not coming in completely blind.

What I'd like to have in this tank is a 2 clowns, an anemone or hammer coral for hosting, some sps gsp and mushrooms, and a few zoas and some cool looking harder to keep stuff down the road.

Looking for advice. Not only how to proceed with a dirty non rodi tank, but also with some stocking ideas, both corals and fish. I also need to likely replace the bulbs. If all goes well, I will probably get a larger tank but this is kinda dipping my toes in the saltwater world. I have tons of experience with planted, co2 injected tanks, but not a personal saltwater.

Will include pics, hopefully an I'd on the type of lionfish. Thanks for reading!

Container for large water changes

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:04 PM PDT

What do you guys use for large water changes? I currently use 5g buckets but its annoying to have to fill 5 of em up to do a 25g water change on my 125. I was thinking maybe a brute trashcan with a pump maybe.

Puffer fish “alternative”

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:50 PM PDT

Puffer fishes got me hooked into salty water tanks - I know, I researched a lot and I'm so upset that I don't think I will be able to take care of one (I had a lot of freshwater tanks a long time ago). But I'm really, really bummed about it, more than I should! I sometimes go to a restaurant that has a huge tank with puffers so I can watch them. I got a nano tank this week and I'm ready to start my journey. Is there, by any chance, some species similar to puffers that are not so troubling? I am planning my stocking and want to make the best choice for a beginner. Thanks!

Downgrading from 57g with 30g sump to 24 gal help

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:16 AM PDT

So I have a deep blue 57g with a eshops adv 30g sump. I have two Hydra 26 HDs, icecap 1k gyre, some jebao wavemakers, and tunze auto top off. I only have two clowns and a starry blenny.

I'm soooo tired of doing large water changes. I started with a biocube 32, and it was Soo nice to just do one 5 gal water change every two weeks. I kinda want that again.

SCA aquariums has a nice all in one 24g for $200 right now. Any thoughts about downgrading and if I do min rock work, it would be enough room for my 3 fishes? I found a nice cabinet for 100, so I could get an all new setup for about $320

Any thoughts?

Edit: most of my corals are dead from a tank crash. My ac went out when I was on vacation, so space isn't an issue right now. I only have two zoa's, gsp, and duncans left

Can someone post their AI prime settings?

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:48 AM PDT

I used another reefers settings from years ago but I don't think it has enough blues. At the time the config was good for what I was growing but that has changed to a large variety of coral.

I'm just looking for a nice dark blue setting, I'm just not sure how much of the other colors the tank actually needs to thrive.

Thanks in advance

Any additional lighting options for Biocubes?

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:51 AM PDT

Specifically the 32. I've been thinking about getting one for my desk, but was wondering if there are any options for more substantial lighting...or possibly mods that anyone knows of. Obviously I could remove the hood and hang something above it. Just wondering if there are any other options other than that and the stock option. Price range is expendable.
