What are your experiences with Dennerle nano corner filters?

Hello everyone,

I'm using the standard Dennerle nano corner filter for my 30 l Dennerle nano cube. The tank has been running for almost a year now, it's pretty heavily planted with a lot of moss, and stocked only with shrimp (don't know how many exactly, I started with 20 and they've been breeding) and snails. Since I've been using the same filter with the filter mat it came with ever since I got the tank, I think it's time to replace the filter mat. I give it a rough clean every week or so when I do my small water change, but of course over time it's been getting brown. I know this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but afaik it does reduce filter efficiency? Correct me if I'm wrong. This is my first tank, so all this is pretty new to me.

So here's my questions. Do I even need to change the filter mat? I could just get a new one to replace the one I have. However, dennerle also offer filter granules and I've been wondering whether that would possibly be better filtration than just a new filter element. They're compatible with the filter, so the switch to them wouldn't be a problem. Does anyone here use these granules? I read somewhere that they're easier to clean and replace since you can just replace a small portion and don't have to worry about loss of filter bacteria. I'd love to hear any and all opinions on the granules and also on the standard filter element of that filter. Maybe someone here has switched from the standard element to the granules and can share some advice?
