Does anyone elses axie stare them down until you come over and say hello?

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 11:17 PM PDT

My boy likes to stare at me when I'm in my room, and when I come over to him he raises his head and swims around a bit. I know he's probably just excited because there's movement, but it's a nice thought.

Is my juvenile axie overweight? And are these rainbow(?) rocks safe for this tank? They made the water cloudy even after soaking

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 07:07 PM PDT

What rocks are safe for axolotl tanks?

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 08:50 PM PDT

I purchased some carved rainbow rock today from a local fish shop today, soaked them for a couple hours, and put them in the tank. The water got cloudy, and my axolotl is flicking their gills a lot more. Is this rock safe? I took them out for the time being.

HELP! my axolotls gills are shrinking

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 10:09 PM PDT

So my Axolotl never had really big 'fluffy' gills but I've noticed that they are shrinking. I'm really worried about him and I don't know what to do. I've been reading a lot but I'm not really sure what the cause is for him.

  1. I have a new piece of driftwood. I've boiled it for a few days but it still browns the water. I know this is normal but I also know that driftwood can lower the PH in the water. I can't find anything about lower PH being really bad for Axolotls??

  2. We had a really warm summer in the Netherlands and I know temperatures can cause harm in some way but I've looked at photos of him right after the heat wave and his gills were fine. I don't know if it's the big change in temperature over the last few weeks?

  3. I know oxygen can be a problem. All my plants died and i now have 2 small real plants and the rest fake. I did get him a air stone and he seems totally fine with it. But maybe the lack of plants is the problem?

He is eating fine ( earthworms and sometimes a maggot) he also doesn't look stressed his tail is straight and his gills down. He also swims around like a young Axolotl does.
his gills are just losing the 'fluff' and this is making me very worried about him

Don’t know if I should be worried, is this an okay colour ? He’s looking red (the flash hides it)

Gravel vs no gravel in axolotl tank

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 05:36 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide whether or not to get rid of the gravel in the tank.

On one hand, gravel is

  1. Closer to their natural environment
  2. Allows them more of a grip on the surface.

No gravel seems appealing because

  1. Easier to ensure the tank is clean (as in I can see poo and plant debris easier)
  2. No risk of axolotl eating the gravel
  3. Worms that I feed it wont be able to burrow into the gravel if my axolotl isn't immediately interested in it
  4. My axolotl was probably born/raised in a no gravel tank

Would love to hear some opinions!

Why does my baby Lucy have small black specs on her head? Is she a dirty Lucy? Or is it too early to tell?
