First time snail owner! Can you guys give me some advice?

Hello all! I have recently convinced my mom to let me get an aquatic snail as a friend for my betta fish. Yay! While I'm super excited, I have quite a few questions about aquatic snails and was hoping you guys could help me answer them. I apologize in advance for the number of questions!

  1. One of my most pressing questions is what do snails eat? I know that people say to supplement their diet with cuttlebone or algae wafers but I've seen quite a lot of different things. Some place said shrimp food worked while someone else said crab food or something like that. So I was wondering if anyone had a decisive answer for me.

  2. Do I need to quarantine my snail? I know that snails can get sick (although I'm like an anti-expert) but I was wondering if they could make my betta fish sick and if I need to quarantine them in advance?

  3. Also how can I tell if my snail is sick?

  4. How do I acclimate a snail? They don't come fully in water if they're shipped, right? So how do I get them used to the water?

  5. My mom is terrified of snails, so how do I keep them from escaping? I have a topfin 5.5 gallon and wanted to cover the slight opening on the top to keep the snail from getting out. Does anyone have any advice on how I can do this?

Thank you all in advance for your advice!

Is it dead?

I've been keeping snails a few years now, and when they die they usually create a bad smell pretty quickly, and I immediately change the water and clean the tank. I bought a new snail (nerite) that hasn't moved sense the second day. It's been about a week sense it has moved. It doesn't smell bad, I picked it up to see if it was suctioned to the rock it's sitting on, and it wasn't. It's packed tightly in its shell as if it is hiding, and not hanging out a little like I've seen dead snails do. The other snail I bought at the same time from the same tank is healthy and doing great. Should I leave it in the tank or get rid of it? Or put it in its own container?
