Aquatic Koi Making Koi pool outlet safe, help! |
Making Koi pool outlet safe, help! Posted: 24 Sep 2019 02:43 AM PDT Hi - I have Koi on a streamfed Victorian pool here in England, which has a 2 foot wide water exit. During rainy weather a lot of water comes down the stream and I'm concerned the Koi could go down the exit and in effect suicide. I have a grate but when I use it the leaves block the grate so the pool overflows. Has anyone come across pool exit designs that allow debris to be discharged but in some way prevent fish from going over the side? Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Does this Pond Circulation Design Make Sense? Posted: 23 Sep 2019 07:29 AM PDT I'm putting a koi pond in our back yard, and we've been DIYing it as much as possible to save on expenses. The pond is based mostly on the Sacramento Koi plans (fusion of 3,000 and 6,000, as our pond will be ~4500), but then we've DIY'd the filters. Unfortunately the website/forum that the filters were on is apparently down now, but I luckily built the filters before this occurred. Here is a quick schematic of the plan Quickly, the filters are made in 55 gallon drums, with water coming in at the bottom. The input has a swirl, to allow bulky materials to settle, or be caught by the matala pad filters as it rises. After the matala pads is biological filter material, which is essentially shipping strapping in a net (to be easily removed). At the top is another pipe that water exits out of, before heading to the pump, and then waterfall/jets. All filters/pumps are at or above the water level, nothing below. I'm not a plumbing-oriented person, nor do I have a heavy physics background. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me whether an external, self-priming pump would be able to circulate water, or if I'm completely off and it'll just suction off any water above the exit levels from the barrel filters, and then just stop. I was thinking that if the barrels and pump are started over-filled, then the suctioning from the top will pull water in from the bottom drains through the input pipes at the bottom of the barrels. I'm just starting to doubt this as we get closer to completion and need to start cementing the pvc parts together and buy a filter/have an electrician run out a line. Thanks for the help!
