I work at a LFS and I'm having a hard time ethically. Posted: 20 Sep 2019 08:23 AM PDT Y'all are the only community who can understand this. If I hear "who cares, it's just a fish" again I'm going to lose it. I work at a speciality LFS. The kind of store that we generally recommend folks to go to. Most of the job is really cool, I love seeing the various species we get in. We have both salt and fresh. This store is absolutely targeted at serious hobbyists. That said, we have plenty of people who come in for their first aquarium/know nothing. Cool! Welcome to the hobby. 9/10 times they are very willing to listen and go with my recommendations (which usually boils down to 'cycle your tank/bring me a water sample') But at least once a shift, I get that person. The one who doesn't want an aquarium, they want a moving picture on their wall. They aren't going to cycle, maintain, or give the least amount of fuck over the health of the tank. Prime example - the other day, family comes in. They want feeder goldfish. Okay, bagged. They want three juvenile pearlscale goldfish as well. So, as I always do, I start asking about aquarium size, what else is in it, etc. English isn't their first language. They mime out a tank smaller than the ones the pearl scales are in. So probably about a 10g. They want to put the 5 feeder comets and the 3 pearl scales in this tank together. Guys, I tried. Language barrier and all, I tried to tell them they would be killing these fish doing that. They understood, I know they did. Their kid could understand English just fine. And they insisted on it, and because that's the world we live in, I bagged the goldfish and sold them. Knowingly handing these living, breathing creatures over to a death sentence is killing me. Even though it is a small percentage of my customers, it hangs over me. I am knowingly giving these fish over to suffer and die in overcrowded, inadequate tanks. Because people can't bother to learn, to Google, to care. Because its "just a fish." And my LFS needs the sales, needs the good reputation in order to stay open. There are so many ethical issues in the aquarium hobby. This one hurts especially bad today. I just needed to get it out before I go back to work today. TL;DR - Knowingly handing fish over to die in inadequate conditions because people are stubborn ignorant fucks is destroying me. [link] [comments] | ||
