[Advice Needed] I gave up my tank, and I feel like I’m going to die

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:07 PM PDT

TL;DR at the bottom

So, about four months ago, I got a huge spike in the hours that I have to work. I went from about 45 hours a week over 5 days, to 60 hours a week over 6 days. I was so exhausted between that and caring for my kid and house that I had almost no energy at the end of the day to care for my reef tank. After a few weeks of this, I noticed the beginning signs of the tank starting to crash. I knew that even if I went through the initial cleaning and got things back to where they were, it would just end up back to this point. I couldn't stress my fish out that much. It hurt, but I did the only thing that seemed fair to them and brought them back to the LFS. I brought all the living creatures that I could find, including corals and inverts.

Now I have this 50g tank and lights sitting in my living room, cleaned and ready to take back to the store. But I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I say it's because I don't have time, but I know it's because I don't want to part with the memory and the time I've spent over these last 3 years I've invested in this.

My LFS has been extremely generous and understanding. I've been going there for close to ten years and am fairly close with the owner. He pretty much said "Here's your receipt for a store credit, let me know when you want to get back into it and we'll talk then".

I'm itching. I'm hurting bad. There's nothing that I want more right now than to look over and see a tank full of life looking back at me.

With all that information, I have two questions.

1.) Does anyone have any tips at all how to make tank maintenance a little more effective? I have an RO/DI filter, a small HOB protein skimmer. Open to further suggestions. Money is not an issue, as I'm open to taking steps to prep for a new tank. It's all about patience, right?

2,) If I'm completely SOL, ways to deal. Literally anything that you did to get over this hump helps

Thanks in advanced!

Edit: bit of background cause I just thought of it: I've been keeping fish for about 20 years, salt for 10, never had a sump or anything more than a hob protein skimmer.

TL;DR I had to give up my tank and I feel like I'm dying. Tips on expediting maintenance or dealing with getting over it are needed

Upgrading lighting

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:06 PM PDT

Looking to work on upgrading my lighting eventually before I get deep into corals. Planning on a mixed reef likely a majority of LPS however will for sure have some SPS.

Tank is 60x30x24 ~187 gallons

Thinking between Radions, Kessils, Ai, or GHL mitras. Looking for opinions other light selections also welcomed. What would you pick as well as how many fixtures?
