Unexpected New Fish Owner--Advice Welcomed!

Hello! I was hoping to gather some wisdom from you smart fish people. My husband lives three hours away from us for work during the week. He purchased a small house that he stays in during the week, and comes home most weekends. What he didn't realize when he bought it is that the seller would be leaving behind his two rather large goldfish. These guys are in a ten-gallon tank that is obviously much too small for them. We're happy to keep the fish but think they deserve a better space. What's the best size for two fish who are both several inches long? And I'd welcome any tips for how to set up a new tank and transition them. Can we use the existing filter, etc. that we already have? (editing to add that I'm checking out all the info listed in your guides but would still welcome any advice!)
