My friends 15 year old tank died while he was out of town. Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:26 PM PDT Just a horror story. My friend went out of town for three weeks. His tank is fully automated, water changes, top off, etc. his tank is approx 400 gallons and 15 years old. The house sitter had to do three things. Top off the top off tank and feed and change filter socks every three days. Simple. I'm the Emergancy contact for the house sitter because my friend is camping in some South American jungle(biologist vacations?), she called me today crying literally, saying everything is dead. I was at work but stopped by as soon as I got off. I test everything, and it all looks good. Check water parameters and my last test was salinity. Salinity was off the charts. As in I couldn't take a reading. She filled the top off tank every day for the last three weeks with salt water. Last night the tank crashed. Everything. The only thing I could do was suck out water 40 gallons at a time and add fresh. I got the salinity down to 1.026 after two hours and 80 ish gallons. Discarded all dead fish (about 30) Two fish somehow made it for now, both damsels and one shrimp Corals are all covered in mucus and bleaching. I added his old protein skimmer back in to his system to double up. Told the house sitter to change the filter socks 3 times a day He's gonna be devastated when he gets back in a week. I don't know how I'm gonna tell him. [link] [comments]

Adding dry rock to 6 month old tank? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:25 PM PDT Been running a 55G FOWLR for around 6 months but I only have around 20-25lbs of live rock which makes the tank look quite barren. Would there be any problems in adding 40lbs of dry rock and re-scaping the tank? Also, how can I make sure I don't crush my nassarius snails during the re-scape? [link] [comments]

Advice for stocking 50 gallon (36 long, 15 width, 20 tall) reef tank Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:03 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am looking to start a reef tank so I am looking for any advice on fish and coral combinations. I know there many corals there are but I am definitely not looking for LPS since this is my first saltwater tank. I'm think about getting two clowns to start off with but would love any other recommendations! I am very excited to be getting into this. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:33 PM PDT Hi fellow refers, So I feed my 3 tangs( yellow, scopas, and squaretail) spirulina veggie flakes, frozen food (both meaty and herbivore), and give them nori 3 times a week. They all eat great and are quite healthy. I'm trying to add some variety to the food I provide them for better nutrition. So, has anyone tried feeding their tangs broccoli 🥦 or 🥬 bok choy ? I've heard of people doing this and even saw some on YouTube. But wondering if any of you other reefers have tried this? Or if anyone has any suggestions what else I could do for good varied and nutritious diet. [link] [comments]

Using old 5g tank for frag tank? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:47 PM PDT I have an old tank that is the freshwater version of the fluval evo 5 all that is different is the light so if I upgrade the light could I use this tank as a frag tank? [link] [comments]
Picked up a Oceanic 30g Cube. Can you retrofit an AIO backflow to these? Do they make them? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:43 PM PDT So I picked up a super cheap 30g tank with a stand and it also came with 300 W Fluval E Series Water heater Phosban 50 Reactor Tunze Comline DOC Skimmer 9004 DC AI Hydra TwentySix Eheim Autofeeder Test kits Etc. All of this for $200. Originally I only wanted to go with a Nuvo 10g because I figure it will have less of an upkeep, and I'm still thinking I want to go that route. However I was curious if they make backflow systems that can be retrofitted, even if that requires applying silicon. Or is my best bet to just resell some of things, and re-coop any money for a Nuvo 10g? [link] [comments] |
