What type of soil to use for a planted aquarium? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:56 PM PDT Hello! I have a tank for a future Shubunkin. Looking to put live plants in it, but concerned with what type of aquatic soil to use. I know they can swallow small pebbles and have their digestive system impacted. The soil I purchased from petco is volcanic but looks like it can be swallowed with its pebble shape. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Controversial article on goldfish tank sizes... Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:09 PM PDT What do you guys think of this article? I'm not saying I agree with it, but it does raise some interesting points. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:30 PM PDT I recently lost 5 of my 7 goldfish. If you'd like the tl;dr, I'll put it at the bottom. Be warned, this will be long as I would like to talk about a lot. In January, I took home five goldfish from my sister. They were all an inch or under, unexpected fry from her goldies. I set up a 15-16 gal tub for them, as a temporary home. My first mistake was buying a pearlscale a month or so later. He was fine when I got him, but died the next day. I lost one of my original goldfish, Marble, soon after. It was when a second one, Nibull, died that I realized the pearly might have brought something in. I treated the tank with ParaGuard for a while, and my remaining three survived and were happy as ever. Some months later, I saw this sad little black moore at my local Big Al's. I guess he never sold, so they labeled him as a feeder. I felt bad, but left it. However, three weeks went by and he was still there. He'd been moved and labeled as an "assorted" goldfish by then, but he was no doubt the same black moore. He was skinny and his fins torn, so I took him home. He quickly developed into quite the little beggar. The tub was still working out just fine with my frequent water changes, so later when a different store near me had this lonely little fancy left with some commons, I caved. It was probably the last fancy they had for a while so they put it with some other goldies to keep it happy, but I felt bad that it was with such faster fish, and he was still so small. I took him home too, and he was very healthy already so no problems there. Months go by. I wanted to start setting up my 55, because my goldies were getting a few inches long now. Finally, in July I was able to convince my father (with the help of my mom, bless her - he doesn't listen to me well) to let me set the 55 up on the floor, and I can just drain and empty it when the time to set up a stand comes. I visited my [half]sister for a bit (for info, she's over an hour away from where I live), before setting the tank up. By now of course, my tub needed water changes multiple times a week, and my mom was good for that. My sister still had a lot of goldfish "fry" left, even after giving some away to her mother for her pond. There was this gorgeous, warm-toned brown one she had, and I loved him. So, I took him home with me. I knew I had a lot already, but I wasn't afraid to upgrade or rehome when they started getting too big. I just wanted to help alleviate the biological strain on my sister's tank. Of course, on the way home I stopped for fish supplies for my sister first, and saw this gorgeous calico fancy goldfish for sale at the PetSmart. My sister has a calico "oranda" (I don't think he's a true oranda, but his body does make me think of them sometimes. She doesn't really care), and he's GORGEOUS. I always wanted one like that, but had never been able to find any. He was small, and cheap, so I caved. I know, I know, now I was up to 7 juvenile goldfish to go in a 55 gallon. So then, I get home and ask my dad if I could set it up immediately. He wouldn't allow it at first, but when I checked on my goldies, I saw Shounen, my black moore, was acting funny, just being lethargic and resting on the bottom. Then I saw Nomster, the largest baby from my sister, was acting lethargic too. I panic, and once again my mom helped me to make my dad see that they needed to move NOW. So, I start cleaning the 55 out and set it up. I throw in the Prime, then start bagging my fish for some slight acclimation. I put their two giant sponge filters in the tank, and throw in Stability for good measure. But the sponges hadn't gotten dry, and hadn't been off for long, so I didn't see any way for the bacteria to die. I found this old hob filter that came with the 55 when I bought it, and decided to set it up. It didn't come with media, so I took some from other filters, as well as new media I had bought in preparation. Now, the tank was ready. The fish were stressed from the move, but I knew I had to give them time. Soon, they became active. All except Shounen. My new little calico was being a terror on him, so I had to put him in a breeder box within the tank temporarily (he was super small, maybe the size of an adult balloon molly). The other fish didn't pester Shounen, so I assumed he just needed more time. I did water changes every other day, making sure to use enough Prime to account for any possible ammonia spikes, as well as putting Stability in daily. This went on for about a week. Soon, despite what I was doing, all the fish, except for the new calico, started to become lethargic. They started to develop a film over themselves. I panicked a little and thought it was maybe an issue from the new fish, since I know PetSmart is especially bad in most cases for sick fish. I started dosing with Paraguard again, and kept up my frequent water changes, which were at least 50% each time. I usually aimed to remove 2/3 of the water. Then, in the middle of last week, I returned from work to find two of my goldfish, both babies from January, dead. I buried them in the pot of my corn plant (for the non-plant folks, it looks like a funny, small tree), and did a water change. The calico goldfish was still acting like a normal goldfish, and had no signs of issues, so I hoped the others would soon follow suit. I left instructions with my mother, and then left to be with my bf for a few days while I had time off. While I was gone, three more died over the course of two days. My mother accidentally flushed one because she didn't know I liked to bury them, but she buried the others for me. I returned home, and found the little calico, plus the fancy I had gotten from that store where he was in with commons, and.... they were completely fine. The calico, through this whole situation, had never acted like anything was wrong. And the other fancy, though he had been as bad as Shounen at one point, was now acting completely normal. Active, curious, swimming a lot and eating. It's been a few days now, and they're still acting normal. So, I know I made some mistakes. It's not an excuse, but I've been extremely stressed lately, from work especially, and I never bothered to check the water quality. I am certain it was an ammonia/nitrite spike, so in a way I don't know what the test would have done besides telling me how much there was... but still, I should have done it. I still don't know exactly what happened. Did I accidentally kill the bacteria somehow? Did the new filter seeding it's bacteria cause a spike of nitrite? Were the fish simply suffering from the tub, and by the time I upgraded them it was too late for most? Did my mother maybe make a mistake when I was gone at my sister's? I'd never blame her, though. I just wish I knew what happened... A part of me wants to get one or two today if I see any I like, since I need to go and get some more supplies. But another part of me feels scared at the thought, and I get paranoid something else will go wrong if I get more now. Maybe I should leave these last two, Sauce Packet and Tiger-Two, as the sole inhabitants of the 55 for a good long while. I don't know... Tl;dr finally moved my goldfish from their 15-16 gal tub and into a 55 gal, but something went wrong and all but two of seven died [link] [comments]

Does anyone know what kind of worm this is? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:49 AM PDT Please help me identify this gross worm! Found it in my tank today, never seen before. Params are 0,0,<10. Tank is 30 gal with 1 fancy goldfish, 1 dojo loach, 2 nerite snails. I have encountered detritus worms before, and this thing looks way different, it appears to have legs and as seen below it's very red. [link] [comments]
