Rant about enthusiasm & patience, from an old aquarist

Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:01 PM PDT

It can be assumed that everyone here loves and cares about animals. We enjoy learning about them first hand by taking them under our care so we can closely observe then. Because this is a hobby which requires the husbandry of animals, it's unethical to cause people to make impulsive decisions which affect the survival outcomes of the animals under their care. This hobby 100% requires anybody who's participating in it to be self aware of their enthusiasm and keep it in check. Animal's lives depend on it because unchecked impulsivity leads to the neglect. I've seen enough animals die, under the care of people who think an aquarium is a 3 month project, to fill a pickup truck. Tempering our enthusiasm and taking responsibility prevents this waste of life.

Yes, let's be happy for people joining the hobby. Let's love their go get em attitude. Let's also ensure they are responsible, too, by not convincing people that the hobby is easy, cheap, and instantly rewarding. Too many people get into it and kill animals when they lose interest 1 year later, or their credit card is maxed out due to poorly planned, impulsive purchases. Glueing a coral frag to brand new rock isn't success, anybody with a credit card can buy a tank, fill it with saltwater, and epoxy frags in it. Keeping that Coral thriving for 5 years is success so enthusiasm must be tempered with patience and dedication.

Speaking of spending money, how come the discussions here involving those considering the hobby are dominated by purchasing advice? It takes hours every week to ensure your water constantly has what's needed to ensure that Coral thrives, from research/reading, testing, adjusting and changing water, feeding, removing, pruning, treating, quarantining, dipping, introducing, troubleshooting, etc, etc. We all have the responsibility of ensuring those interested in getting into the hobby understand you can't spend your way to success, it requires labour and time and some periods require more time than others. A tank started with little research will require vastly more time than a tank started with extensive research. The public Aquariums or zoo may be better for somebody who can't (or won't) put in the time.

Old tank syndrome... 2 years of neglect isn't "old tank syndrome". Lots of posts here are troubleshooting questions from people who don't even do water changes, let alone test it. Never vacuuming your sand and just letting shit build up in it isn't old tank syndrome, that's neglect. Never controlling the nutrients and just letting it overgrow with algae isn't old tank syndrome, that's neglect. The living animals in the tank grow and have changing needs. The colony or frag introduced today will have entirely different needs down the road when it grows to a foot in diameter, from water flow to lighting to nutrients & food. Don't fall in love with a tank at month six because you're still in the honeymoon period. There's a lot more work to come.

This entire rant could be summarized by saying temper expectations and be mindful of the consequences of convincing somebody to follow your recommendations. To an extent, we're all responsible, in a second hand sort of way, for the outcome of tank inhabitants under the custody of people we're giving advice to. We need to be role models by demonstrating good stewardship ourselves and honest about the time spent and tribulations encountered looking after the animals we care about. Finally, we need to care about ensuring animals thrive, not just survive.

UK-based redditors, where do you purchase corals online?

Posted: 12 Aug 2019 10:34 AM PDT

I'm kind of getting fed up with my LFS asking stupid prices for small corals/frags. Recently, I was told that you can actually purchase these corals & more online, so I was wondering which websites you use? Thanks :)

Is this a young aiptasia? It does retract fully into a hole. It doesn't quite look like any images I can find of aiptasia though. It also for now, doesn't seem to bother the hammer at all. Maybe not big enough to sting? Anyone know for sure what young aiptasia looks like and is this it?
