| Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:04 PM PDT Without ammonia I assume the nitrate and nitrite bacteria inside of BioSpira would starve off. I can skip this all together and just let the ammonia go from the shrimp and monitor the cycle over the next 4-6 weeks... but, well... you know. It's hard to stare at new 120 with rock and sand and nothing else. The question is do I need to wait for the ammonia to reach a certain threshold before adding 2 bottles (I have a 120g display and 40g sump). Bottles are 75g each so that nets me close enough with the water volume loss from rock. After adding BioSpira I will of course keep an eye ammonia/trite/trate every day, for a couple of weeks. But cutting this down from 6 weeks to 2 or less is really appealing to me. Any experience/advice? My first tank (75g) I did something similar with Dr. Tim's but knew next to nothing at that point. | Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:23 PM PDT I have a yellow tang, a tomini tang, a diamond goby, 3 four striped damsels, a hawk fish, a six line wrasse in a 100g system. I was thinking of adding a lawnmower blenny and 2 clownfish to this system. Can anyone see any problems with the current or future stocking of this system? Thanks. [link] [comments] | ||

| Selling entire setup, how much should I ask? Posted: 15 Aug 2019 11:25 AM PDT Unfortunately the new apartment I'm moving to doesn't allow fish tanks over a certain size, so I'm forced to take a break from the hobby. I've decided to sell my entire setup including livestock and wanted to hear other opinions on pricing. I know I would likely make more money selling the livestock first and parting it out, but I'm super busy at work and with the move, so I'd rather price the whole system lower for my personal convenience. It's a complete 40g breeder setup with at least $1600 (retail) in equipment and over $1000 in fish/corals totaling about $2600. What's a good listing price to start with? Has anyone else had luck selling entire systems? Is it a waste of time trying? [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 15 Aug 2019 11:14 AM PDT Does anyone have much experience making DIY rock for your tanks? I am looking into it at the moment and I want to give it a try. All the videos I watch recommend using play sand a mould. My question is could I get away with using builders sand instead? It is much cheaper. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 15 Aug 2019 10:53 AM PDT Hey guys, I have this bronze bracelet that I wear and it turns my skin a little green in the area, so I know its made with copper. My question is, do you think it could become an issue with cleaning the tank and when I have to stick my hand in? I try to keeps my hands out of the tank, and I can't really imagine that any significant amount of copper will leach off the bracelet when I stick my hand in the tank, but I just wanted to check what you guys think. | Cycling with CaribSea LifeRock and no other live rocks or sand Posted: 15 Aug 2019 06:07 AM PDT I'm in the process of setting up a Red Sea Max Nano. Unlike all my other tanks, which were seeded with live rock or sand (or both), I've decided to go bare-bottom on this one, and have only used CaribSea LifeRock for my scape (20 lb in the 20 gallon tank). I'm using the Red Sea Reef Mature system to do the cycle and I'm about 3 weeks in. I have not added any stock (even a clean up crew )yet. It's going well except that my ammonia levels are still high (about 0.9ppm as of yesterday) and I've not yet caught it at zero. Nitrite is at 0 and nitrates are delightfully high (measured yesterday at 50ppm). Clearly the tank is not DONE cycling.... I'm patient. But since I'm starting with all man-made stuff and have nothing in there that will seed algae, am I right to assume I likely won't get any? And if I don't, will adding a few snails sentence them to starve, or will they be fine? I have every reason to think that even adding snails will give me algae spores "by accident", but I feel like I'm in a chicken-egg routine where I want algae to feed the CUC, but I need something live to seed the algae....
