| Advice for a possibly upset goldfish Posted: 15 Aug 2019 09:21 PM PDT Recently moved to a new place, which happened to have a large but neglected concrete pond in the back yard. Roommate and I drained it, dredged it, filled it and planted it. Looked great, and dropped some goldfish in there to handle the mosquitos. What started as a simple idea to handle mosquitos turned into me taking full care of the fishies. I started finding a lot of joy in feeding, watching them grow, and keeping the pond in good shape and as clean as I could. I had never kept fish prior to this, so I'm going in head first here. Few months later they were starting to get quite big and doing the mating dance. Shortly afterwards, one of the females had some damage to her belly and a fungal growth. Went to the pet store, bought an air pump and some pimafix. They suggested I put her in a hospital bowl for a few days to clear it up. I finally was able to catch her and moved her into the hospital, dropped in the bubbler and the smallest amount of pimafix. She's calmed down since being moved, but she's gasping a lot. Strangely enough not at the surface, and in fact she isn't really going to the surface much at all. Is this expected behavior? Or should I wait for longer than a couple hours before worrying? | Goldfish extremely stressed and hiding after move Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT About a week ago, I moved two hours away with my goldfish in a bucket in the front seat of my car. She was the absolute last thing done at the old house, and the first thing at the new house. However, she is clearly stressed out and hides in her plants and other fixtures in the tank almost all day- sometimes just sitting on the bottom of the tank. How can I help her get used to the new house, and be less skittish in the tank? [link] [comments] | ||
| My tank has too much ammonia- not a cycling related question Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:10 PM PDT To start off with, my tank is cycled and I don't think this is cycle crashing issue. I have no nitrites and nitrates are still being produced (they read at 20ppm and they're 5ppm out of the tap). However I have .20-ish ammonia out of the tap (or chloramines, I've heard scots water like chloramines). My tank is testing at .20-ish ammonia. I moved last week and just assumed my cycle got a bit messed up from the move even though i transported my media properly. But I'm starting to think it's actually that the tap water ammonia plus the fish ammonia is just too much for the filters. What happened is when I filled up the tank it read at .20 for two days. Then after that it was down to 0 and then rose back up a few days later, so that's my best guess as to what is happening. I can't install an RO system since the tank is at work and I don't drive so bringing in RO is prohibitively difficult. I've just added another sponge filter so I now have three small goldies and four filters, (the new one, plus one partially cycled filter, and two cycled ones). I never had ammonia issues before I moved so I know the filtration should be, or at lease has been, adequate. At the moment i'm doing water changes every other day and double dosing with prime. I'm tossing in stability to help speed up the other filter's cycle. what else can I do to help? Will the extra filter make a difference? One my fish is getting some ammonia burns on his fins and I know it can kill them. I'm starting to get a worried if can correct this problem. [link] [comments] |
