Axies Looking For A Home

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:06 PM PDT

I inherited some Axolotls from a newer fish keeper back when I was working at a LFS. Customer brought them in and I've given them a home ever since. I'm moving out pretty shortly here and I won't be able to bring them with me. I would bring them to a LFS if I could, but I live in Southern California. I want to find them a home since they're pretty old now, about 6 or 7 years. If I can't find them a home I would be looking for a humane way to euthanize them. I have 3 Axies, a leucistic, golden albino, and a wild type, in a 40 gallon breeder with a chiller and canister filter.

Here are some terrible pictures that I took of them. https://imgur.com/a/FQbEd3Y

I love them and understand the situation that I'm in and just want to find them a home. PM me if you're interested.

I know this is technically breaking rule 3 of the subreddit, but hopefully the mods keep it up. I sent a message to them regarding this post, but haven't heard back.

Getting my first axolotl, I really need advice

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:40 PM PDT

I've done quite a bit of research on taking care of an Axolotl but what I've read varies from "you need very specific equipment, food, lighting, and conditions or it'll DIE!!" To "eh just give it enough space, food, and clean water and it'll be fine." I've gotten a 20 gallon tank for the Axolotl so I'm not too worried about space and I know how to clean the water and tank. I'm getting the little guy in a couple days and I just wanna make sure I'm doing everything I can for it

How do you keep your tank cold?

Axolotls aren’t eating.

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:55 PM PDT

I've got two, small, juveniles. I've got them in a smaller tank for the time being, to me (a noob) they've got enough room. I plan on upgrading the tank within the next couple months. On top of that, their feedings are important. I don't want them to get hungry and nom on each other.

I've followed the Breeder's instructions, and opinions. I've asked the employees at the pet store, if what I'm doing is right. I've even bugged people late at night, just to be sure I was following the instructions right. Between my fog brain, and my boyfriend's constant questions, I'd rather hear the same thing three times over. How else am I supposed to be 100% in my actions? Anywho, as much as I think I have a clue; I clearly don't.

Factors I am/have considered;

Tank is at 70 deg

They got sloshed (accidentally) on the ride home (it took two extra hours to get home)

Red wigglers got an extra bitter taste this round

Their tank wasn't quite up to par (I'm talking about cycling) {levels were fine when put in}

Overall adjusting to a tank with rocks and plants.

There are some "errors" I intend to fix. Like having a proper fresh water test kit. I'm really, kind of at a loss. The one was eating them fine until today. The other wouldn't eat them, has started too but, then spits them out. I haven't seen them eat or play with the plants. They're active. I mean, what's normal, and not normal behavior? My boyfriend is at the point of giving up. I know he doesn't want to but, we are both rather frustrated. They are babies yet. It's not like we can't just starve them 3 wks while they get situated. I'm not sure what other food can be bought.

Oh! There's no light on the tank. Some sun does get to it but, it's not like it's under a window, getting all the sun. On a bright day, they tank is "bright" but, they seem to hate fake light more.

TLDR: two days and axolotl W won't eat, has begun taking it, and spitting it out. Axolotl C was eating, now just isn't. No signs of unwellness. 70 deg F tank.

Looking fpr a better home for my ~2 year old wildtype

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:41 PM PDT

** I'm hoping this community will not criticize me too harshly as I am just trying to do what is best for my guy. I am a former axolotl owner and did not buy him on a whim**

I feel like I have tried so many different troubleshooting ideas but my guy is just not happy. He is rarely eating, even when I attempt to hand feed for 30+ mins. The water params are OK but not great, mostly due to the fact that the place that I moved has poor tap parameters. He is in a 20+ gallon long with a hide and sand bottom.

He is not in critical condition but he is definitely undernourished due to the fact that he will not eat axolotl pellets, bloodworms, or earthworms. I'm really at a loss for what else I can do and I don't want to see him wither away.

I am located in NY - approximately one hour out from NYC. I would be willing to drive to meet if someone would like to take and care for him (previous experience only please).

Local aquarium store says cloudy water is bacteria bloom, but these whispy white strands are everywhere. Truly a bacteria bloom or am I actually dealing with algae?

Which care instructions do I trust!?Please help.

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:51 AM PDT

I am looking to get two Axolotls but I am overwhelmed by all the different websites giving care instructions. Some say they cannot be housed together and others say they must be. The size of the tank also differs between websites as well as cleaning and water safety needs. Is there a verified website or source I can trust? Or anyone experienced and willing to give me as much information as possible?

One of my Axolotls died from nitrate poisoning. Any advice to care for second little guy.

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

My towns tap water has had problems with brown water & it was apparently taken care of. This past weekend I changed their water and soon after they stoped eating. I bought water and treated it but next morning the little guy had passed. I looked online and only see how to treat the water but not on the Axolotl care that should be given. The second one doesn't want to eat right now, any tips on how to care for him while he recovers.
