Has anyone messed with a Xenia Refugium? Posted: 27 Jul 2019 10:57 PM PDT Hey all. I am starting up a water box 80.4 and have gone out of my way to leave the entire middle chamber of the sump free for a Refugium by grabbing an external skimmer. Originally I was going to do chaeto and rocks for pods but I have learned that here in Aus we don't have good macro algae that isn't toxic (apparently even the algae wants to kill things) because of this I was toying with the idea of a Xenia based Refugium because I have heard of it being successful and will have a spare AI Prime sitting around anyway. A few concerns I have are: 1) I really don't want it to get into my display tank. I have seen too many over run to risk it if it's super likely. 2) not working well enough, some personal input would be cool. If there are any Australians who can help me plan a Refugium with stuff we have that would be cool too. [link] [comments]

How can I get mushrooms off of some rock? Posted: 27 Jul 2019 08:23 PM PDT So I just rescaped my tank and I want to get rid of a big chunk of rock, but I want to keep as many shrooms off of it as I can. What's the best way I can get them off of the rock? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jul 2019 07:59 PM PDT Hi everyone, around 3 weeks ago I put a shrimp from the grocery store in my tank to start the cycle, around 6 days after I put it in I noticed it started to decay and smell bad and my ammonia's and nitrites were really high so I thought, good the cycle is working, and took the shrimp out. The following weeks my ammonia's and nitrites were going down and my nitrates were slowly going up. However when my ammonia's and nitrites got close to zero, so did my nitrates, to my understanding nitrates aren't supposed to go down until you have a water change. I'm not quite sure why that happened and would love an explanation, maybe I am just thinking about it wrong because I've only done freshwater before. There is some algae growing on my biospheres so I'm taking that as a good sign but I'd like to know what's going on. Setup - 20 gallon long Fiji pink live sand Refugium mod hob filter with biosphere and some filterfloss and growligh 20 lb Dry live rock 2lbs of live rock Powerhead 100 W heater [link] [comments]

Moving White Dots on "Hair Algae"? Posted: 27 Jul 2019 07:17 PM PDT Hello all, I came home to these moving white dots about the size of a pen tip crawling among these algae strands. They seem to be irritating my clam. I also found my cleaner shrimp dead but it is difficult to saw if its correlated or not. Below is a gif of the white dots moving. https://imgur.com/gallery/1ABNBsB [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 01:38 PM PDT I have a sump with a refugium. When I started the tank I put tons of live rock in there to aid with the filtration. I got a wild hair up my ass and wanted to take out some of the rock because it was just way too much. This is when disaster struck. I left everything running and started to remove the rock. I also put in a small PH to keep the cheato tumbling. When I look at the display it looks like milk. Evidently there was so much detritus in the refugium it went to the return and then into the display. When it was all settled it looked like velvet was covering EVERYTHING. I just did a 50% water change and blew off the rocks and stirred it all up again in hopes to strain it out. Am I just in for the long hall. Do a water change a week amd just siphon it out a water change at a time? After this debacle I looked all through my sump amd there is detritus in every compartment. What should I do to clean all of it out? I was thinking of getting a small pump, stir up each chamber and then sucking all the water out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
