Is this sand too coarse for my goldfish? It came with a used 4 ft tank I bought. I heard bad things on here about goldfish getting gravel stuck in them so was thinking of changing them to sand but this sand seems like mini gravel. It sinks to the bottom instantly. Too coarse? Thanks guys

Is my water pH too low?! Why and what do I need to do about it?

Posted: 28 Jul 2019 03:47 PM PDT

All water parameters (with exception of pH) seem to be fine. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10-20ppm. pH had previously always been between 7.2-7.6. However, the last few weeks pH has been hovering between 6.8-7.0. Is this in fact too low? If so what do I need to do about it?

Only things that have changed in the past month or two have been the addition of 3 mystery snails, and the use of a timer on the LEDs. Went on vacation for about a week so set the tank fully auto with a feeder and the lights on the timer. Had the algae growth pick up a bit and from reading that seems to be because the light cycle was on too long, and has since been adjusted.

First time goldfish parents!

Posted: 28 Jul 2019 03:02 PM PDT

My boyfriend's brother won a jumbo goldfish at a fair and had it in a bucket. Goldfish was obviously miserable ( wasn't swimming, eating, etc) so my boyfriend and I decided to go out and buy the fish a proper home.

ALSO: any advice for taking care of a goldfish? We want Ian to have a nice and happy life. We have the starter kit from PetSmart.

I'll try and post a pic on this sub of the fish and the tank :)

Underweight Goldfish?

Underweight Goldfish?

https://i.redd.it/zg2ow89qq3d31.jpg

My grandmother has been staying in my room for the past few days and kept complaining about how I have hardly no fish in there. We went to the store with the intention of getting some baby bnp which I planned on growing out and breeding. My grandmother then changed my mind for me and insisted on getting several other types of fish. Anything from platies, to mollies, to cichlids, to a pearl gourami. We went back and forth for over an hour until I managed to talk her in to buying me three gold inca snails and one (1) goldfish. (She tried to get me to get two.) I chose the one that seemed the most active and healthy in the tank, but the whole tank was very clearly stressed out. Acclimated her, put her in (I don't have a QT which is one of the reasons I was waiting on getting a goldfish to begin with) and she immediately sunk down very stressed. Okay, nothing unusual, but she seems to mostly just swim around at the bottom. My params are perfect 0/0/? and I've been dosing with slime coat to (hopefully) try and help with the stress.

She doesn't show much interest in the flake food that I put in, but is rather constantly going around the bottom of the tank siphoning for food. Pretty slow, not a lot of energy, but deff more than what she had last night when I put her in. She seems to be getting slowly livlier, and I was wondering because she looks very very skinny, if you guys thought it had something to do with perhaps being starved? And if so, why she wouldn't be interested in my flake food? (I did get her from PetCo, ngl)

What are these white dots? I went to school for three weeks to take a summer class, and my mom was taking care of the tank. I come back, and it’s covered in these small white dots. I have a goldfish, a guppy, and a few snails. The creatures all seem and look normal.

Looking to upgrade goldfish tank

Posted: 28 Jul 2019 09:20 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my goldfish tank from 10 gallons now that my fish are bigger. I have two comet goldfish. I was looking around and it's seems that a 30 gallon tank would be good. Would a 30 gallon tank be adequate for my two goldfish?

How often should I add plants to a goldfish tank?

Posted: 28 Jul 2019 05:31 AM PDT

I have a 110-gallon tank with one single-tailed goldfish in it. Currently, I have three plants, I believe two anabasis and one Java fern. The last plant I got was the fern but I'm not sure just adding in plants recently after a water change is ideal. I want to create a livable habitat in a tank and I want to add more plants. How should I go about doing this successfully?
