RCS tank Update

What I love most about my tank is that every angle has a different feel. Walking around the tank is interactive. Every view has little details that pop and the shrimp seem so happy :)

This is a real thing!

So I was scrolling around Reddit and stumbled upon this group.

Surely a joke group. I mean shrimp are for eating, right?. Maybe they are farming their own, you know never can tell what your ocean shrimp have been eating, some people take their food very seriously. Possibly growing to feed to other larger fish.

But No. You guys and gals really have shrimp tanks.

Nice ones too. I will not poke, prod, or make any off color remarks. We all have something that's different, what others might think is odd. More power to ya.

Kool Tanks.

Shrimp and CO2

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:38 PM PDT

Could anyone help me out? I would like to understand shrimp with CO2 supplement. My wife said you can't dose with shrimp, and when looking it up online, all I can find is anecdotal articles both for and against both liquid carbon and CO2 injection.

Can anyone explain how either liquid carbon or CO2 injection have an effect on shrimp? Which is safe/not safe, and why.

I've gotten a lot of questions about my tank so I'll just leave all of the information incandescent think of here. :D

Tank: 20 gal from pet smart. I'd love to look into rimless tanks though.

Decorations: I used dragon stone. They are just set in nestled into the substrate and they support each other's weight

Substrate: I started with fluorite onyx gravel. This is for the nutrients for the plants. Over the top of that, I put black silicate sand. Nutritionally ineffective but it allows plants like dwarf baby tears and dwarf hair grass to anchor themselves better. Also, because shrimp try to blend into their environment, a dark substrate will give them a bolder color than a light substrate.

Plants: My carpet is dwarf baby tears. Up against the rocks I have patches of dwarf hair grass. It requires constant attention to make sure you don't have the grass poking out of the tears in weird places. I also have dwarf hair grass set into the dragon stone in some of the larger pockets. It breaks up the monotony of the flame moss

The flame moss and dwarf hair grass on the rocks are just poked in. I didn't use glue. It allows me to move things around when the mood to change the tank a bit sets in, and when it's time to tame the flame moss, you can just take it out, tear chunks that you still want off and replace the smaller portions. It leaves a more natural look than cutting it back

I also of monosolium tenerum poked between some of my dragon stone. Like the rest it is just nestled in. It breaks off easily so be patient and try to set it how you want it the first time.

All of the plants provide a large surface area for biofilm. This makes for happy shrimp :)

Filter: My filter is an aqueon whisper rated for a 20 gal. I should have gotten one slightly larger when I started. I got a large sponge for a filter (black) to put over the intake. I just cut it down myself to fit properly. You have to protect the babies! The sponge also adds surface area for biofilm. My shrimp are often seen eating off of it. They love it

Lights: I have two current USA satellite pros. Its over kill, but to make sure the mountain doesn't block light from one side or the other, I needed them both.

CO2: I was doing co2 injection. I recently had an issue with my timer that nearly killed off my entire colony. My plants do fine without it now that the tank is established. All of the plants are slow growing and dont need it. In this case I think simple is best for my stock.

Fertilizers: I'll have to come back to this one. I've used micro and macro fertilizers with no issue to the shrimp, but because I'm not using co2 anymore, I dont use fertilizers

Shrimp: I got my stock from the local fish store. I don't know who they bought from, but I've heard good things about theshrimpfarm

Fish: Neon tetras. They thrive with the shrimp. The shrimp eat any food that the fish dont. I had gold pintail endler-guppies but they started dying off. I think it's because guppies rest on the bottom of the tank and that the shrimp harassed them to death. I ended up moving those to my 75 gallon community tank.

Water changes: I can not stress enough the impact an RODI system has made on all of my aquariums. I have no more die off from water changes, and the water changes I did from the aforementioned co2 incident saved my colony. I wouldn't have been able to do this with tap water or if I had to go to the local fish store to get rodi water. It has made my lo I've so much easier and less stressful. I do one 50-70% water change weekly and clean the filter at this time.

Water testing: I conduct water tests every 2-4 weeks depending. Recently I just rely on my neon tetras to let me know when something is off. They are the reason I fixed the (again) co2 incident. They start acting funny before they die and shrimp give very little change in behavior before it's too late

Food: I use shrimp specific food. My RCS like the herbivore kind more than the omnivore kind. I'll get the brand's out later.

Hope this helps!!! I'm always free to answer any questions.
