Lesson learned: Double check your calibration fluid Posted: 15 Jun 2019 03:50 PM PDT So I did something stupid... I've got a tank that's been up about 10 years now. Over the last several years its been slowly going down hill, even though all of my regular tests were well within range. Salinity, PH, Amonia / nitrite / nitrate, iodine, magnesium, phosphates, etc. I've had a lot of inverts die on me even though the fish, and of course the bloody xenia, have been perfectly fine. I've been stuck and trying to correct replacing various things (MP40's for better flow, completely rebuilt the sump and plumbing, cleared the built in overflows, etc.). The last thing I really had to fall back on was a DSB that really just needs replaced at this point, but none of my readings have really led me to believe that was the issue either... I even sent off a Triton Labs test last week for everything to see if they could find something I can't test for... Long story short, I've had refractometer calibration fluid I've been using for YEARS that I've always calibrated to. I had another bottle in reserve that I wanted to switch over to, so I dumped the last little bit and tried the new fluid, only to find that the new fluid read WAY low (like 1.014). Thinking the new fluid was off, I checked with RO/DI water that read WAY below 0... oh oh. So near as I can figure, I have slowly been raising my tank salinity over the last several years to where it is ACTUALLY sitting now: 1.036... which kinda explains a lot. Lesson learned, double check the calibration fluid against RO/DI at 0. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Jun 2019 09:39 PM PDT Just bought a used reef octopus 1000 hob. Was loud on startup and external pump rattles a bit. Noticed the impellar is broken inside the pump. It isn't stabilized because of this and rattles. It's made of glass. Is there a glass to glass glue I can use that is aquarium safe that can handle the force of the spin or do I need a new rotor? Rebooting my tank after 2 years Posted: 15 Jun 2019 08:24 PM PDT I moved and haven't had the free time/space to get my tank back up. What should be the steps to get everything back going? The tank/equipment has been dry and the rock has been in a trash can since move day with water... I bet it's dried out or just say in low gross water. Any help would be appreciated [link] [comments]
Help me understand how DI resin interacts with CO2 Posted: 15 Jun 2019 04:30 PM PDT I've been a reefer for several years now and a situation has always confused me... I have well water and live out in a rural area. On my 4 stage RODI my incoming TDS is between 6-8ppm. When my DI resin is fresh I of course get 0ppm, but when it's "exhausted" I get 1-2ppm. I have already read that CO2 impacts DI life, and I see that myself. My workaround is to remove the "exhausted" resin and dump it into a wide bowl or flat lid for a few days. The brown resin turns back blue and I'm able to run water again at 0tds. I can get about 20 gallons before my fresh resin is done. So, is the resin really not able to filter any longer once it's turned brown? Why is it that gassing off the CO2 can return it back to proper TDS? Does this mean that while I'm running water with exhausted resin that the 1-2ppm I'm seeing is a false positive? [link] [comments]

Looking for ideas for a biocube 32 Posted: 15 Jun 2019 12:21 PM PDT I'm thinking about moving my current bio cube into a much larger aquarium. Any ideas what to do with the old one? I was thinking seahorses but it seems like a lot of upkeep. [link] [comments] |
