[Help] What is this slimy stuff on my coral? Can't blast it off with a turkey baster. I think it's sand. Right? Wrong?

Pests in filter?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT

I have a large homemade canister filter that's for my 2 biggest tanks. I only clean it every 5-6 months.

The first tray is several meshes & filter floss to act as a mechanical media. The 2nd tray is activated carbon. The 3rd tray is bio-foam sponge, the 4th tray is ceramic biological media, and the 5th tray is a mix of clayballs + lavarock + gravel.

In my 4th & 5th layer during the latest cleaning, there's a pond snail infestation. I know these are generally a non-problem, but are these going to add waste to the tank or create any water quality problems from being in the filter?? Should I remove them or leave them be?

In my 3rd layer, there are the occasional nematode. How big of an issue is this? Should I do anything about them?

Filter Media Question

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:56 PM PDT

I have a 10g with a HOB filter still in cycle at the moment but have been looking for answers on filter media. Would i need to have sponge or bio media of some sort or could i do without?

Stock suggestions for EVO 13.5

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 07:13 PM PDT

Hi everyone

My EVO 13.5 is empty (aside from coral galore), as my clowns moved up to my 175. I'm trying to come up with a fun fish or critter to keep in there (with some of the coral staying).

My 175 has YWG, clowns, chromis, RG, wrasse, cardinals.

Some ideas:

  1. Mantis Shrimp
  2. Pygmy Anglerfish (if i can find)
  3. barnacle blennies?
  4. Clown gobies?

What do you guys think? Any cool ideas?

Who has tried the vodka method?

Using phosfree and doing water changes, definitely under feeding. But I can't seem to get my cyano or phosphorus levels down.

Anyone know where I can find a cover for a ASM G2 skimmer?

A little unconventional but until i can get more free time to worry about corals i think this will do.

What exactly is a protein skimmer? And what does it do?

Light drop off on my tank

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:41 PM PDT

I've got an innovative marine 25gallon lagoon. It's 12 inches high. For lighting I have a Kessil 360x. Currently my light is about 6" off the water. I'm not getting as much spread as I'd like and I'm seeing some shadowing on corals high in the tank but not directly under the light. Given the size of my tank and the power of the 360x, any thoughts about raising the light higher to get some better spread?

[ID] LFS had a buy 2 get 1 deal. I’m pretty sure the bottom left is flowerpot and bottom right is pipe organ but can anyone tell me what the top one is?
