Posted: 12 Jun 2019 02:03 PM PDT So.... I have a batch of crayfish that I got in November of 2017, and one of the females dropped some babies on Thankgiving Day (2018), then both of the surviving females dropped more babies on March 3rd of this year. Of the Thanksgiving batch, there is one survivor. There had been five (out of like 20 that made it past the first week), and one of them was so much bigger than the others that I moved him into a tank with Tomotoa, the last surviving male of the original batch. A week went by with no problems, then Tomotoa devoured him. Meanwhile, in the original tank, there were four remaining. One of them got Much Bigger than the others, but still not approaching the size of either of the two adults, so I wasn't comfortable moving her(?) into another tank. I wasn't sure if the smaller three were hiding (lots of places for it), but I came to accept after a while that there were only two left (including the larger one). Today I went to feed them and saw that the last small survivor had been eaten. So now I'm concerned. Right now I have two large tanks and a small tank each with one cray (Tomotoa, the last male of the first batch (large tank), Te Fiti, the last surviving female (small tank), and the as-yet unnamed sibling eater discussed in the last paragraph(large tank-- though I'm probably going to swap her(?) with Te Fiti), and a large tank with about 25-40 (hard to get an exact count because I *know* some of them are hiding.) That last count, I feel, is still lower than it should be, considering it started with almost 200. I'd kind of like to recombine the adults for another round of babies (I'm working on an aquaponics system, so the more the merrier), and split up the remaining babies to cut down on cannibalism, but now I'm worried that I'll put Te Fiti in with Tomotoa, and she'll get eaten. Can anyone give me advice/perspective? [link] [comments] | ||
Crawfish found near Savannah, GA, USA Posted: 12 Jun 2019 09:36 AM PDT My friend found this little dude in her backyard near Savannah, Georgia. It was wandering around, and a burrow was found nearby. There's a pond nearby but no major rivers very close to her home. This one and a few others were found after heavy rain. Preemptive thanks for the ID! [link] [comments] |
