I came home today to see my lovely boy was finally succumbing to dropsy. He changed my whole perspective on fish owning and how much fish can impact you. I will miss him more than he will ever understand. Swim in peace Mal.

New fish owner

Hi,

I've recently come into possession of a Crown fighter, Steve and have had him since Wednesday. I was told they were a hardy fish however I now know they take more than just a bowl and their tank being cleaned once a week (thanks to this sub), which is what the pet shop fellow originally said.

I live in a rather cold house and it is winter atm. He was hovering at the bottom, was acting lethargic and hadn't eaten food that I could tell for the first 2 days (as is typical when the water is dangerously cold, I've since found out) so I hurriedly went out and bought a heater for him. He has eaten this morning, which I was thrilled to see and I've installed the heater, at a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius (78~ Fahrenheit).

It is now 10 hours later and Steve has become incredibly sluggish, hovering near the top of the tank. Initially the warmer water filled him with energy I had yet to see so I was super happy with that result but now he has fallen heavily 'asleep' and is difficult to disturb - moreso than I would have thought is normal. Did the water temperature increase too quickly for him and is it now ill effecting him?

Am I just stressing too much? It is nearing midnight so it is normal for him to be inactive so I'll post an update in the morning.

I also know I need a much larger tank, a proper filter and lighting, as well as a hidey-hole for him. This is something I'm going to do ASAP but for now is his sluggishness merely because of the time of night or because the temperature increased too fast?

(Also is that 'airhole' on the top of the tank sufficient or should I have it a bit more open to allow for more oxygen?)

Any advice for a new owner is welcome!

Cheers.

tldr: Stressing about having heated up my fishes tank too quickly and worried it's caused his current sluggish behavior (It is midnight though).
