Cheap Red Cherry Shrimp Tank

Posted: 11 May 2019 03:15 PM PDT

I wrote up this guide about how to setup a red cherry shrimp tank for $50 ( https://freshwatercentral.com/how-to-setup-a-red-cherry-shrimp-aquarium-for-50 - the site has no ads or anything dw) from my own personal experience and I was wondering if you guys had any other tips to cut the cost even further? (I still want them to be in a glass aquarium, etc.)

Dyed shrimp?

Posted: 11 May 2019 04:29 PM PDT

Strange one here so I hope someone can help. Last Saturday I purchased 3 blue shrimp from my LFS. I placed these 3 shrimp into my established tank that contains home-bred yellow and red cherry shrimp and 3 red rillis (yes I know I shouldn't be mixing them but I don't care about breeding out the colour, I just like shrimp). Two of the 3 shrimp died overnight, and I caught some of the yellow shrimp eating the bodies. I removed them immediately.

Seemingly overnight, my yellow shrimp turned bright blue/turquoise. Water parameters are perfect and I have used the same food for months. None of the red cheery shrimp are affected but every single yellow shrimp changed colour overnight. Has anyone seen this before? How likely is it that the blue shrimp I brought were dyed blue and that dye has somehow affected my other shrimp?

TL:DR My shrimp changed from yellow to turquoise overnight.

Mixing colours of Davidi in a tank?

Posted: 11 May 2019 06:06 PM PDT

I am currently setting up my first dedicated breeding tank (10 gal) for shrimp and am trying to decide what to buy. I've narrowed it down to davidi (red cherry and colour morphs) and was thinking about mixing colours. I have heard varying results ranging from all wild colour to some really interesting colour variations, and was wondering what people here had experienced.

5 gal, former Betta tank turned shrimp tank. Didn’t expect them to reproduce. I’ve counted 11 so far!

Anyone tried giving fresh Moringa leaves?

Posted: 11 May 2019 04:52 PM PDT

I picked up some fresh leaves in the farmers market today. Can't find anything with a few google searches; so I'm going to try blanching it briefly and see how they like it. Anyone else with experience feeding Moringa?

Shrimp tank questions.

Posted: 11 May 2019 11:58 AM PDT

So some time next week I will be getting a Fluval flex 15 gallon. I'm really excited, but I'm going to scape this tank differently from my betta tank. The goal is to do it right this time. I have been reading and seeing good results for plant life and I can only assume good results for cycling is by adding organic soil and capping it off with my normal substrate. 1 inch soil 1 1/2 inch of substrate. My question is does the organic soil really help maintain a cycled tank what brand of soil would you recommend and what should I be worried about. I unfortunately didn't cycle my first aquarium right and I feel like a schmuck for that. Lesson learned and I know where I went wrong but what can I add to this tank to make everything easier on me and my future shrimp that will eventually inhabit my flex.
