Any idea what is wrong with this shrimp? He's not dead because I tried picking him out and he keeps on flinching every time I get close.

[Beginner Help] Building a small tank and residents advice?

Posted: 03 May 2019 02:52 AM PDT

Hi there. Quick background, I posted something very similar to this on r/aquariums yesterday and a user recommended I try here. Would have crossposted but for whatever reason I can't currently so this will have to do. First post and first time here, so hoping to find lots of great info tips and see plenty of lovely shots. Looking forward to working with you all!

Onto the main bulk though.

I don't have much space left in my room (currently got two 60L tanks, one either side of me, one for my three Alpine Newts and another 'general' fish tank) so I'm thinking I'd love to get a little nano style tank to complete the room. In an ideal world I'd have a few more tanks for all the things I want to get but I'll hold off for now.

My current plan is to have a small tank with some little shrimps, some Congo frogs, and a few tiny nano fish species. The idea here being I love the idea of a shrimp garden but I'd also love to get these Congo frogs (not clawed as they're aggressive) in a tank they won't get bullied by bigger fish. Only risk I see is maaaaybe the frogs going for the shrimps? However the Congo frogs are the smallest variety and extremely passive so I would have thought it would be ok, especially with decently sized shrimps? I'm not sure about snails as I don't want them to go breeding crazy as they have in my general fish tank and I frequently have to remove.

They're all harmless so in theory I'd assume they'd all work in a little, totally passive tank BUT PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG. Will likely avoid pea puffers as a nano fish exception here as I hear they can be aggressive.

.

However I've never done a shrimp garden and I'm new to caring for these sorts of things. Literally any advice beyond "make sure they're in water" would be helpful.

Primarily I suppose, I have no idea how where or how to buy and plant moss, nor maintain it. I'm not sure how I'd feed nano fish (especially when you get them they're miniscule and most food seems to be bigger). Any special care they need beyond water changes etc? What sort of size minimum would I be looking at for a sort of tank I describe here?

Edit: I just saw the infographic posted by u/chaotemagick a few months back which is a great start but I still need a bit of expansion on this honestly. For example, I'm used to gravel type substrates, never even seen soil based substrates in my LFS, but this certainly explains how moss would be grown!

Any advice would be amazing here, especially if I haven't even mentioned it. As much as I'd love to get this all ready soon, I want to make sure it's all beautiful and healthy before rushing on in!

Thanks in advance all!

Shrimp breeds

Hello, so I work at a pet store and I'm ordering in some different species of blue neo shrimp. I have blu velvets/ dreams in my tank now (I ordered velvets but they look more like dreams in my opinion) so now I'm ordering some blue diamond. Is there going to be a lot of wilds being produced in my tank as a result?

Can someone tell me which would be better substrate

Posted: 02 May 2019 06:59 PM PDT

I am still hung up on what I want for substrate. I'm gonna be setting up a cherry tank, I'm stuck between miracle grow potting mix and a cap of sand, or ada amazonia. I see everyone using it I'm just afraid of the ph buffering too low I'm at 7 ppm with 7 kh

Could you put Blue neocardinas and Red neocardinas together in the same tank? I am already getting red ones, should I get blue ones too?
