My 5 gallon planted tank! I have rosette swords, dwarf grass, cryptocoryne undulate reds, and Cyperus Helferi!! Along with a Marimo moss ball! I’m hoping the dwarf grass will spread nicely all throughout the tank!

Having trouble with power head placement. I currently have the filter pumping out right behind the power head and I seem to be getting good flow. Any suggestions?

Planted tank test help

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:26 PM PDT

Earlier this year I started a 40 gallon breeder and decided to have a planted tank. I know about the freshwater master kit, but is there a kit to test the water for plants? Is it necessary? I feel like it would help to know if I'm putting too many nutrients in, or not enough

Can anyone give me an ID on this? Found it looking sad and unlabeled in a petco bin.

stop algae without filter?

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:10 PM PDT

Ive been trying to grow blue lotus in a summer tub setup for a couple weeks now. I took a clear plastic cup and filled it up about 1/3 with sandy silty loam, filled the cup with a little water with 1 cm between the soil and the surface. I then put in 2 nymphaea caerulea seeds and they sank after a day to a rest on the soil surface. They germinated after about a week or two, and produced roots but never broke out of the seed shell. I'm sure they would have, given time, but manually breaking the seed cover off was not an option. (for those of you who don't know, Nymphaea seeds are tiny, smaller than a poppy seed) I had it about 10 inches from a full spectrum 20W grow bulb, and in the first couple weeks after germination it got choked out by algae. There was oily layers forming on the top that I tried to skim off, but I could never get it all. How would I prevent algae in such a small container? do I need an aerator? what about water treatment? what is something tough on algae but easy on a little seedling? Thanks in advance! If I am in the wrong sub, please point me in the right direction.

Sand substrate=cloudy water

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:03 PM PDT

I can't seem to get the water to clear. I rinsed the (Play) sand to the point that I thought I'd double my water bill! I placed the sand in the tank, covered it with a plastic bag and sat a plate atop the bag. I poured the water slowly and it worked VERY well not stirring the sand up. I expected there to be some cloudiness and I assumed it would clear in a few days, but I decided to help it along by stuffing my HoB filter full of Mr Clean erasers overnight. Worked great! I turned off the filter before removing the erasers so as not to dump the murky water back into the tank and then put the filter cartridges in. It has been two weeks and the water still isn't clear. I added a few plant cuttings, a plant tab and a dose of liquid Flourish a week ago. The filter has been unplugged for two days now. It still isn't clearing. This is the first time I've used sand as a substrate and I'm beginning to regret it. Especially since I have purchased 50 lbs of black diamond blasting sand with hopes of starting another tank soon.

The tank is a 29 gal and my filter is an Aqueon QuietFlow 75. Could the filter be too strong? Would I be better off putting a sponge filter in instead? Perhaps I should do the Mr Clean eraser trick again?

Any advice?
