New to Jararriums. A few questions if I may?

So I've ordered a 2 gallon jar which is arriving this week.

I'm hoping to grow a Monte Carlo carpet and have read that it's advisable to do this dry when not using C02. My question is what substrate should I use for this. I've read that regular garden soil is OK but do I need to something else to layer on top of it?

I'm in the UK so if you are able to link any recommended products or brands that would be great

And what sort of lighting would be best? I'm planning to get a desk lamp for it. Would it be best to get a fluorescent bulb for it?

I'm eventually planning to home a few shrimp and snails but understand I need to keep it dry to allow for the monte carlo to root and then give it more time for the water to mature once topped up.

If you have any other advice or things I should be aware of then please let me know.

Soil, sand, plants, and snails with no detectable NH3. Just added 2 guppy fry in each jar. So easy!

Help! I have a hitchhiker!

I just set up a 3 gallon glass cookie jar with water and live rock. However, a little microstar made his way in. The tank is nowhere ready to support creatures and as this is my first salt tank Im worried about him starving, or worse being hurt by ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels. What should I do?
