Advice for transporting a 12 inch long goldfish 2.5 hours by car? Also, tank decorations/enrichment

Posted: 06 May 2019 10:22 PM PDT

I am looking to transport over a foot long comet goldfish 2 1/2 hours sometime in the next month or so.

I have no idea how to do this, I was recommended to transport him in a cooler with a battery powered air pump. However, this fish is my child and if he passes away from stress I will be EXTREMELY upset. Therefore, does anyone have any type of advice on how to transport him? He's young (3.5 years old) and extremely aggressive (he will bite). Not only am I concerned about the actual transporting, but I have no idea how I should get him out of his current tank, as the largest fish net sold is smaller than he is. I also do not know how long I should have the new tank cycling before moving him. I want to be very safe with this move, like I said this fish is my baby and I cannot lose him.

Another question: What is the best plants/decorations/enrichment to put in his tank? He is extremely destructive. He once got gifted 3 moss balls which he immediately shredded into tiny little pieces by the next morning and plugged his high powered filter. He rips plastic plants out of their bases/gravel, he knocks over and/or flips any solid figures in his tank, and he often somehow rips the bottom of his filter off. He is a monster. However, at this point, the only thing that I trust to keep in his tank is a castle that he is now 2 inches longer than (i have to keep it on its side because he will destroy. I have a Pleco that likes to stay in there during the daytime). The gravel in the bottom of his tank is now becoming too small for him and he's eating it, so I have to buy a larger size of gravel. Does anyone have any ideas of something I can place in his tank so it's not just empty, or give him somewhere to hide/play around with? He will be moving to a 55 gallon, as that is what I can afford at this moment. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Let this be a lesson kiddos, don't buy 1-inch goldfish and not expect them to grow. They can get ginormous and mine isn't even done growing yet.

How important is the day/night cycle for goldies?

Posted: 06 May 2019 03:23 AM PDT

i live in the far north of scotland (northern isles) and we're hitting that time of year where we have little darkness. My tank is near a large window. the tank lights are on from 9-5 but the tank stays light long after. should i cover it with a towel when i leave the office? it gets dark about 11 and light about 4:30 but soon it'll be dark from 12-3:30

Help with caring for goldfish

Posted: 06 May 2019 11:33 AM PDT

My school is observing environments as a part of their science curriculum. The kits come with 2 gallon plastic containers, some living plants, rocks, and water conditioner. They don't provide any filtration or heating equipment.

Is there anything I can do for these fish? I know these kits are not providing an ideal set up. There are some goldfish and guppies in separate containers. I moved the containers towards the window because the water felt freezing. I am willing to purchase some equipment, just need to know what they need. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Update and Questions on Fancy Goldfish

Posted: 06 May 2019 12:36 AM PDT

Hello all! I posted a while back about my calico fantail asking about tank sizes and all. I had upgraded to a 10 gallon tank immediately after that post, but I had more questions.

I was wondering, what is the purpose of algae eaters, and if I don't have any real plants, is there any need for them?

If I do need algae eaters, what pairs well with a fancy goldfish?

I'm assuming my water quality would go down when introducing another fish to my tank? Which I would assume mean more water changes?

Thanks in advanced for the help.
