How to politely tell my vet that they are actively killing their fish?

Posted: 21 May 2019 09:13 PM PDT

They're very nice people and treat my animals very well, so I don't want to make them mad. But at the same time they're keeping two goldfish in a 5 gallon tank. How best to educate them on a better home for their fishies? They desperately need it. One already has a swim bladder disease. I could possibly take them from them but the only spare tank I have is a 20 gallon, and I don't think even 2 fancy goldfish can live comfortably in a 20 gallon. If I'm wrong about that should I offer to donate them the 20 gallon?

Considering substrate

Posted: 21 May 2019 05:16 PM PDT

I have had black gravel for years in my tank and now that I have goldfish with mouths large enough to fit the gravel in their mouths, I've realized I should probably change it. I read that sand is the best substrate because they can sift through it and supposedly it doesn't trap debris, but from my experience using sand in my smaller tanks, it is harder to clean and if debris does get trapped it is very difficult to get out. Has anyone else had issues with sand? Or are my worries for nothing?

Otherwise, besides sand, I was considering river rocks with larger smooth stones mixed in, but of course people say this would be even harder to clean and doesn't allow them to sift and enjoy their natural behavior.

Thoughts?

Otis has these three bumps on his wen. Has the same three on the other side as well. Is this normal?

I am worried about my 2 goldfish, they are both starting to show red spots on their fins, one much worse than the other. What is this and what can I do?

Need help with tank size for 1 common goldfish

Posted: 21 May 2019 01:57 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

Wondering if I could use my water dragon tank for my goldfish. It's 19"D × 6"H × 70"L...

The volume seems ok it's the height that bothers me but I thought I'd ask!

He's currently in a 20gallon tank, is 10 years old and healthy. He's lived in the water dragon tank for a long time without issue, I took him out because of an injury.

Thanks!

Goldfish Rescue Operation

Posted: 21 May 2019 08:23 AM PDT

One of the teachers at school has four goldfish, now it's the end of the year so he's flushing them. I'm taking two, trying to find other people to take the others. Any good suggestions on what I can hold them in until I can get a big tank at my mom's house?

Help/advice please: Hi, i’ve had my goldfish for about 4 years, he now lives with my dad so I don’t see him much but I came over and saw that something is wrong with his eye. I thought he lost it, but it might just be covered with a clear fluid, I can’t tell. What should I do? Or is he ok?

Cycle crashed!

Posted: 21 May 2019 09:53 AM PDT

I have two fancies in a 40 gallon breeder. A little while ago, they the larger moor started getting cloudy eyes, so I began treatment with antibiotics, then API general cure, when the Kanaplex didn't seem to be working. Treatment has been going on for weeks now. I have noticed in the past few days that they have been having all sorts of issues; fun rot, what looks like the beginning of fungus, black ammonia burns. I checked my parameters and (no surprise) ammonia was at 1 ppm. I am surprised because I have a huge sponge and HOB filter that have been running for years. I may have overcleaned to mitigate their sickness. They are still swimming fine and actually looking happy. But I need to reestablish the cycle quickly! Is there any way to do this safely? I just did a 70% WC after seeing the high ammonia. Should I continue with those every day?

I'm willing to do anything, I love these guys like my children.

Canister filter is coming soon, so I can hopefully keep their water quality better in the future!

How can I use dog dewormer to dose my tank?

Posted: 21 May 2019 05:55 AM PDT

Due to specific laws, I can't get fluke/tapeworm/prazi without seeing a vet which is about $180 to get a prescription (and almost my whole tank is infected). Areas selling these locally are about $80 and buying off eBay seems to be cheaper (at $30ish dollars but shipping costs another $30).

My fish are getting skinnier and skinnier. I'm wanting to try using dog dewormer with prazi as the main active ingredient. How can I dose my tank this way?

Thank you!

New baby goldfish scared?

Posted: 21 May 2019 08:18 AM PDT

Hello.
I have a 55 gallons tank with two goldfish, one if a common (like 5-6 inches) and another one is a Ryukin (3 inches). My brother went to a fair, and he won a goldfish. He does not have a tank for it, and he decided to give it to me. I was not looking for another common/Comet (because of their size and my tank is small) but I felt terrible for the little guy. I put the new little guy in my tank, and I noticed that he is scared. He is always down or up trying to hide from the other two fish. I am assuming that he is scared because he is small and the common and Ryunkin are bigger than him.
Do you think is that the reason why he is scared and hiding all the time? Can I do something to help him to feel better?
Thank you

Advice on fix for weak swimmer

Posted: 21 May 2019 05:57 AM PDT

Hello, hoping to get some advice. I have a goldfish sold to me as a lionhead that has always been a bit slow. I found him wedged upside down this morning and when freed he just gets tossed around by the spray bar.
Would he do better in a smaller aquarium of his own? Or a long shallow tote set up?
