First clutch! Took a while, but there it is! It’s like finding presents under the Christmas tree

I think my snail is dead... but I’m not 100% sure

Hello so sorry for a downer first post here, but I need some help here. Last night I saw my usually very active Apple Snail just floating at the top of the tank, he was not clamped all the way shut, and had been alive in the morning. I took him out of the tank immediately since he shared it with my Betta, and I put him in a cup of water. In the morning he seemed clamped into his shell, and someone in my household said they saw his snorkel sticking out. Since then when I've checked he's back to the partly opened looking stage and when I pulled him out to check there was not much smell (but I don't know if he's been dead long enough for that if he is indeed dead) but he had this weird sort of goo on him. So I'll check on him again tomorrow, but I just don't know. I'm 95% sure he's gone and that whatever the person in my household saw was kind of his ending moments. He was already fairly large when I got him a few months ago so I wouldn't be surprised if he was older to begin with and maybe didn't have much time left. I would really appreciate any thoughts and advice. Thank you for your help. One last thing, if there is a chance that he is alive, is it ok that he is in a non-temp controlled cup? Thank you again, I appreciate the help.
