Question: How do you control shrimp population in your aquarium?

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 02:36 AM PDT

Right now I have around 10 neocaridina davidi in my 125l/33gal walstad method planted aquarium. One of them already had shrimplets and another is about to have. I know there's plenty of food in the aquarium because they don't care about the food I give to them.

I'm afraid they may overpopulate the aquarium and break the balance. They coexist with 2 neritina, 2 assassin snails and lots of physia snail.

Recommendations?

Get some fish? Let them be? Give away them?

So... What's the chances of this blue-green guy coming from a tank that's been only RCS for 6 months?

My local pet store sold me 10 of these “amano shrimp”. Can anyone please help confirm that they are indeed amano shrimp?

(Q) water perimeters

so can I get some opinions on if it would be safe to mix half distilled water and half tap and then add shrimp salts to raise tds back to a reasonable amount ? Would this harm the shrimp or would it be okay? (Neocaridina) btw

Caridina shrimp confuse me

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:03 PM PDT

Is this a male or a female shrimp? https://i.imgur.com/C5z2AYt.jpg

I always thought it was a female since it's fairly thick with a curved belly. However, it's never been berried and doesn't have a saddle. (Do caridina females even get saddles?). Recently, I found out it's a male because I caught it chasing and mating with a confirmed female. Though even my confirmed females look very similar to him (size and build wise).

What's the best way to sex caridina shrimp? I find the males and females don't differ as drastically as compared to neocaridina. I also tried looking at antenna length as well but it seems inconsistent. Any photos with identification would help for sure.

How long does it take for a shrimp to look berried after mating?

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 05:33 PM PDT

I currently have twelve cherries in my planted 5.5 gallon tank. I've heard after molting, females will attract males to mate. In the last few days a few molts have gone around, and since there's about eight females and four males, I'm pretty sure there must have been someone that mated at least once.

After a female has mated, about how long does it take for the saddle to go away and the eggs to reappear as berried? Most of the girls have very obvious saddles right now.

2 Deaths Today and Both in the Same Exact Spot

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 03:09 PM PDT

Had my two richest color shrimp die today. One this morning when I woke up and one just now I noticed.

All my water parameters are fine, just tested. Also no Copper in the water either and haven't done a water change in about a week so it can't be that either.

The strange thing is that they both died in the same exact spot, literally. Right at the base of a plant in the front of the tank. I looked and there is no hydra in there that could kill it (had a bad hydra problem a month and a half ago)

Any thoughts??

How long do you leave a piece of boiled veggie in your tank?

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 08:28 AM PDT

I boiled some Broccoli stalk yesterday and but a small chunk in the tank. The shrimp went crazy for it there has been a couple of shrimp eating it since I put it in. Do I leave it in until it's gone or should I take it out at some point?
