Question: Buy saltwater from LFS or mix your own?

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT

I have a 4 gallon tank with zoa and LPS. I have been buying my saltwater from my LFS but I am curious what y'all think. Given that my tank is a pico I have been just buying the saltwater, but lately the salinity of the water at the LFS has been very inconsistent. Latest batch was 1.028 so I had to mix in some RO to get it at 1.025. Nitrates and phosphates of the LFS water is always 0, so I got that going for me.

Would it be better to just keep fixing the LFS water or should I start mixing my own?

Lighting Question

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:47 PM PDT

I am new the the Saltwater hobby. I have a 20 gallon high that has been cycled and running with livestock for about 2 months. I have concerns that my lighting is wrong. I have an AI Prime HD+. I found a profile online that I have been using seems ok but was looking to see what other people are running with a similar setup (none of the profile on AI's site are 20 gallon). Current coral: Brain, Candy Cane, GSP, and Discosoma Mushroom. I want to add a RBT Anemone to host my clown pair.... Hopefully

Another question, I'm running a Vortec MP10QD at 20% max. Is this sufficient flow or should I turn it up a bit?

Thanks!!

[Help] 20 gal long

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:05 PM PDT

So, I got a 20 gallon long tank, like the title says. I'm gonna take my sweet time cycling it, getting good gear for it and just making sure it's good to go in general. The help I am asking for is help with friends to go in it, on top of the cleaning crew of multiple shrimp, hermits and snails. I was thinking watchman/pistol, and a firefish, but was wondering if i forego one of both, if maybe the tank may be a decent size for a mandarin? Or what other fancier looking finny friends may work, thinking maybe a clown and some corals/nems. I really am not sure though, so any feedback would be super appreciated. Thank you all! I love the pics that get posted here and am looking forward to sharing my own when I'm all set.

Sump/refugium question

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 02:44 PM PDT

Pardon if this is basic, but I had a question about algae and my refugium compartment in sump. I left a chamber between my filter sock chamber and the bubble trap to put some macroalgae in. Today I picked some up from my lfs and put some in the sump, but strands went through the bubble trap and got sucked up through the return and into the display tank. Is there a trick to getting it to stick or stay in the refugium, or is this something that just happens? Thanks!
