Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

Temp drop

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:24 PM PDT

Hi guys

So I woke up this morning to a temp of 23c

Found out my heater had packed in overnight

Put a new heater in and now bringing tank up to temp

Everything seems ok in the tank, is there anything else I can do or will everything be ok?

Cheers

Found this hitchhiker in new tank. Can you help me identify? Seems like a snail with a small shell? Is it reef safe?

I found this to be an interesting answer to the question that gets asked from time to time, “Can you eat corals?” The answer is, “Sometimes”. Yes, I know anemones aren’t exactly coral. Still, I was quite surprised to read this in the Madrid Zoo/Aquarium that they are eaten in Spain.

[HELP] I need help with figuring out sump please

I'm planning on buying this aquarium but I do not know how I am going to detach the display tank from the sump/stand for transportation.

Any suggestions on how that works would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What’s a good “new fish survival rate”? I’m sitting 4/6 right now...

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:46 PM PDT

I have a 55 gallon salt water tank and, of the 6 fish I've bought, only 4 have survived. Two clowns, a bangai cardinal, and a lawnmower Blenny, introduced in that order 1-2 months apart (clowns were together) have acclimated well and seem happy.

A couple months ago I got a scooter Blenny (this was before the cardinal or lawnmower). He acclimated well and seemed happy for a week, and then on day 7 I couldn't find him in the tank at all, until I moved a rock and found him belly up. LFS assured me that I wasn't doing anything wrong and that sometimes "it's just the fish". I accept that, a lot of this hobby can be hit or miss.

Today I picked up a royal gramma to add some color to the tank. Acclimated it over the course of 30-35 minutes with 50% water changes in its back with water from my tank. I finally release it into the tank, and it immediately goes and hides (I've read they like to stick to caves so I thought nothing of it). I go to check the tank before going to sleep, and it's no longer in its hiding spot. Instead, it's lifeless and stuck on my power head in take.

So right now I'm sitting at a 66% success rate on introducing fish to my tank. That can't be normal, right? What am I doing wrong? What can I do better?

Tested my water at LFS. Amonia/nitrite at 0, nitrate at 10 (was planning a water change this weekend). Salinity at 1.025. I made sure the salinities matched between my tank and the fish bag before releasing the fish.

Any and all insight is greatly appreciated!
