Fritz turbo start to kick off cycle!

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:33 PM PDT

Need some advice! I'm planning to dose some fritz turbo start bacteria to get the cycle started on my new tank. It says on the bottle not to run a protein skimmer for at least five days..

Should I remove my filter sock as well before dosing? (200 micron)

Need another Reefer's outside view point

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:55 PM PDT

I have been keeping notes since I moved my 14 gal Biocube into my new Redsea Reefer 250, so their is a fair bit of information so I hope the people that make it through it will be able to provide some insight.

TLDR: Since moving into the new tank after a period of successful acclimation and addition of new species; SPS has been slowly browning and receding with very limited polyp extension and LPS (Hammer and Galaxea) have thinner tentacles and a lack of color after 3/24 addition of new corals and fish. Currently SPS and LPS as still suffering and that bothers me. My Softies (Toadstool, Mushrooms, Xenia, Zoas, GSP) are all doing really well and fish all look healthy and happy. If anyone has any insight or suggestions I'll be glad to read them. I know everyone has different techniques and opinions and I'll take them all with a grain of salt. HA! If you have follow up questions I will answer them the best I can as soon as I can! Thank you in advance.

Set Up:

Tank: RedSea Reefer 250

Lights: 2- AI Hydra 26's 10" over tank surface (same schedule as previous tank)

Filtration: Bubble Magnus Curve 5; Chaeto Algae refugium

Flow: 2 - Nero 5's at a random cycle from 15 to 40% power

Latest Parameters:

  • Salinity: 34 ppm
  • Calcium: OFF CHARTS 500+
  • Phosphate: .10ppm
  • Nitrate: 5.0 ppm
  • Alk: 6dKh

Notes:

2/16 - First corals in tanks

2/20 - Remaining corals and fish added to tank from Biocube 14

3/5 - Protein Skimmer Installed

3/10 - Water Change (10gal) addition of trace elements

3/12 - Addition of Calcium (Purple Up)

3/18 - Trace element addition

3/21 - First Alk. Test - 6dKH

- Start dosing with RedSea Foundation B to increase by 1.4 dKh by adding 42ml

3/22 - Alk. Test - 7dKH - Continue dosing

3/23 - Alk Test - 8dKH - Continue dosing

3/24 - Worked at fish store for coral picked up: 2 Chromis, RBTA, Xenia, Gorgonian, Hairy Leather Coral

3/25 - Alk Test - 9dKH. Everyone alive and well but not happy with general state of millepora frag and tentacle extension on galaxea. Moved Galaxea to a new location thinking maybe light wasn't right where it was sitting. Lots of Green Hair Algae that I've been noticing for a while. Performed a water change (10gal) and dosed with Calcium **** and Trace Elements. Removed as much Green Hair Algae with tooth brush during water change and dosed with Reef Flux, which allegedly helps with reduction of Green Hair Algae. Turned off Protein Skimmer as recommended for 3 days.

4/2 - Hammer Coral still looking incredibly agitated noticing red slime on rocks (possible imported with corals from LFS from 3/24). Perform 10 gal water change and dose with red slime stain remover. Protein skimmer immediately starts overflowing so turned off.

4/5 - Protein Skimmer still overflowing when turned on. Hammer Coral is agitated. Added ChemiPure Elite bag. Ran protein skimmer and drained off 5 gal through it and replaced. Turned off skimmer.

4/6 - Protein Skimmer still overflowing. Ran another 10 gal through it and replaced with new. Turned off skimmer

4/8 - Protein Skimmer still overflowing. Ran another 2 gal through before removing and thoroughly cleaning protein skimmer. Skimmer working properly now. Performed remaining 3 gal water change for a total of 5 gal for day.

My one thought is maybe I did too much too fast and so I have stopped dosing Alk and will continue to test parameters to let things stabilize. I had enjoyed success with my 14gal Biocube and so I feel maybe I'm missing something when it comes to larger systems.

If you are still with me. I'm more relaxed now that the protein skimmer is function correctly but SPS and LPS as still suffering and that bothers me. Thank you in advance!!!!

****Writing this I realize that when i dosed the Calcium on 3/25 it was the end of the bottle. It says to shake it vigorously on the directions and I didn't always do this because I'd forget. This may have led to a very concentrated amount of Purple Up entering the tank and causing the Calcium to spike. The SPS had been struggling and very limited polyp extension prior to this.

Can you do water changes too often

How often is too often for water changes? Would two 15% changes a week be too much?

Euro Bracing vs Cross Bracing? 20g High Rimless

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:31 PM PDT

Hello,

I got a 20g rimless tall that I had de-rimmed and I need to know whats the best method of bracing for it?

Its a 20g high with the dimensions : 24" x 12" x 16" 4mm Thick Glass (Freshwater)

Euro Brace or Cross Brace? Ultimately, I plan to keep the tank for a long time and want to minimize bowing.

A lot of people suggested a Euro Brace.

Euro Brace:

•Should I do the same thickness of glass? 4mm or should I go for 6mm brace?

•Should I do just two braces horizontally across the glass? or the four corners?

•How am I able to put a HOB? filter?

Any feedback or experience would be great. Thanks.
