Anemone help

Posted: 17 Apr 2019 04:25 PM PDT

So I have had my anemone for about a month. Everything seems fine, it's color is great and it's been eating, and it's mouth isn't gaping. I have had them before so I know the warning signs. However, this damn thing keeps moving! It has done 4 tours around my tank and is currently on his 5th. He moved to a spot and stayed there for about a week. Then he moved across the tank for about a day and then ended moving back to the exact same spot as before. He stayed there for a few days then moved again about a foot to the left. He then has been in that spot for the last two weeks and when I got home today, was floating around the tank. I know they move but this seems super excessive.

I have been feeding him so what gives? Does he want more light? Should I turn things up? I have already adjusted my flow to the lowest setting. Could it be my maroon? He beats the shit out of it but the anemone doesn't close up like the one he previously killed (it was too small for him, so he beat it to death). Just wondering if anyone has experience this?

Must have for a 90 gallon

Posted: 17 Apr 2019 10:12 AM PDT

Hey guys! Just in the process of cycling my first tank and I thought it would be fun to ask for suggestion on what to put in!

I have a 30 gallon sump, a decent skimmer.

So far I basically want snowflake clowns, a fox tail and the popular pistol shrimp and goby pair.

How often to change RO/DI media?

Posted: 17 Apr 2019 03:58 PM PDT

Hi all,

I've had my BRS 5-stage RO/DI device since December of 2017. The unit has a TDS monitor on it and I've tested the output with a separate TDS meter, both say "0". That said, should I change my RO/DI media?

I ask because my reef tank has had algae problems for the last 6 months. The tank was set up back in December of 2017 and it was doing well until just the past 6 months. Since then, I've been dealing with cyano blooms, diatoms, and other types of algae that I can't identify. I've lost almost all my LPS corals. I barely feed the tank, I run a skimmer, I change 2%-5% of the water daily, and my test kits look OK with the exception of low Alk.

At this point, I think the only issue is the RODI water, but both TDS monitors show "0". So would you change out the media at this point?

Thanks all. Super frustrated but hoping I can finally nail down my tank's issue.

Fish Died - Advice

Posted: 17 Apr 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Hi all, I recently started my first tank and had the unfortunate death of my black ocelaris clownfish this morning. I'm hoping to learn from the experience to see what I can do better in the future. When I went to bed last night it was swimming fine with it's buddy (a wide-bar ocelaris). When I woke up this morning it was laying on its side in the sand breathing heavily. I had tested the ammonia the night before (API test kit which after buying heard is junk) and then in a panic tested again this morning. Both came back looking somewhere between 0 and 0.25. I understand any ammonia is bad, but in the past this color on the API which looks close to 0.25 has turned up a 0 at the LFS a few times. This has caused me to think a 0.25 reading on my API is really a 0. Nitrite came back 0, nitrate close to 0 and pH 8. I didn't know what to do, but wanted to save it, so I decided I'd try and do an emergency 20% water change. I removed 20% and added 10% new water and was waiting for the other 10% to warm up when he died. In the final bit before he died it would try and swim and then flutter back down to the sand and lay there. I was planning on taking the water I removed to get tested by hopefully a more accurate test, but what do you guys think? Ammonia poisoning? My hermits, other clown, ywg and pistol seem to be fine. So maybe this fish wasn't healthy? He'd been in the tank 2 weeks. Anything else I could have or should have done different? I'm not looking to be criticized or told I messed up, but looking to learn from the experience in case a similar situation arises in the future.
