How’s my 29?

the way the natural sunlight hits my adf tank makes me happy:-) i may move it since algae can be a problem sometimes, but the way it coats the driftwood is cool looking!

A little update to my tank. Added a some frogbit to the top and the banana plants have taken off.

I bought hornwort when I started my tank, it lost all of its needles and made a mess so I tossed it but I left one sad little piece in and its growing! How do I turn it into more hornwort?

Got the 40 gallon set up! Can’t wait for everything to grow out more!

Any tips for what critters (esp shrimp) to keep in hard water? Or should I try to lower the GH?

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:53 PM PDT

I'm finally getting around to setting up my 40 gal tank! I have a co2 system and everything.

I live in Los Angeles and realized tonight that my water is extremely hard ( ͡° ͜Ê– ͡°) The readings are:

GH: 180 ppm (maybe even higher, that's the top of the testing range for API strips lol)

KH: 80~120 ppm

PH: 7.5

I think the water will soften more once co2 and driftwood is added.

Anyway, I want shrimp and was hoping to get cherry shrimp and maybe a cardinia species like bee shrimp, but now I'm worried they will die because of the hardness.

Any advice is appreciated, especially if you are in a hard water region!

Does anyone know what this white stuff is growing on my driftwood? When I first put it in the tank I had the white fungus stuff grow on it, that's gone, but now this is showing up...?

Which of these substrates for just plants, no fish?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:39 AM PDT

Looking to plant just plants, no fish. I'll be doing a full carpet with some other big guys in the back most likely. So would you go with:

1) https://www.amazon.com/CaribSea-Eco-Complete-20-Pound-Planted-Aquarium/dp/B0002DH0QM

or

2) https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Plant-Shrimp-Stratum-4-4-Pound/dp/B00JGQIY48

I can't seem to tell the difference - thanks!
