ID on these floaters? Got a couple of them in a bag with my fish and now they almost cover the top of my tank.

Ecosystem-based videogame research

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 06:41 PM PDT

Hello r/PlantedTank!

(I read the rules and hope this is appropriate here -- If it's allowed I can link to twitter acct where I post development updates):

I'm working on a videogame about evolution and pond ecosystems, and am doing some outside research to help get some fresh ideas for its development (as well as find potentially interested demographics).

Due to the nature of the game's subject material, I've been reading/watching a lot about Ecology dynamics, and along the way stumbled upon some youtube videos by "Foo The Flowerhorn" which led to the Walstad Method and this subreddit.

I'm interested in what lessons I can learn from your experiences and how I might apply those toward creating a more compelling game experience. Feel free to answer as many or as few of the questions as you'd like!

Questions:

-What's your favorite/most-rewarding aspect of having a planted aquarium?

-What's the least enjoyable aspect?

-What's the most memorable "story" that you witnessed within the tank?

-What is the biggest challenge?

-How did you get into this hobby/career?

-Can you think of any other community that might be interested in this?

-Do you own a medium-to-high-end PC and play games on it?

-Would you be interested in playing this kind of game?

-Additional comments or thoughts?

Thank you so much! I love seeing all the beautiful pictures of your tanks!

Just stumbled across a pic of my very first planted tank back in 2009. It had compact fluorescent lighting, eco complete, and CO2 with no solenoid and a reactor. It’s crazy how far the hobby has come and how much more accessible amazing results are now, just thought it would be fun to share.

What kind of moss would create the best weeping willow effect on this driftwood?

Any ideas on how to improve my tank? I get discouraged seeing all these beautiful tanks you guys have

Can anyone recommend a co2 injection set up with links for purchase? I can't seem to find the all in one kit I used to have a few years back before I took down my tank. I finally set it back up and now that it's stocked and cycled I want to add pressurized co2 injection again.

First ever Aquascape. Very happy with results, 3 months in. Dry start initially on the HC Cuba.

Are those little hairs algae?

FTS : I’ll be adding more plants after this upcoming paycheck but I’m super happy with this addition to my desk space

Recently started a 2.6 gallon shrimp tank, do you think CO2 is necessary? I am getting a decent amount of algae which is frustrating but I’ve never done a planted aquarium before please help! (The picture is when I first set up the tank a few weeks ago)

I know the white stuff is normal on driftwood but should I be worried that some of it is turning red?

Can't get rid of this algae!

I'm not sure whats going on with my tank. All my water params are good. Added DIY CO2 about 2 weeks ago. It's a Fluval Edge 12 with the standard light and a Finnex 12 inch Planted+ 24/7. It seems to be mostly on my Java Moss, but smaller amounts also on other plants. Tank has been running for about 2 months. Any ideas?

Just starting my first fish tank.

I'm really interested in aquatic plants, but I was wondering if I could return and plant some down the line after I have some experience. Is it necessary to plant straight away?

Do you think that a 5gal tank is appropriate for a single betta?

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Sounds like a dumb question, but is it humane to keep a betta in a 5g tank? Obviously some people and especially stores keep them in much smaller tanks, but why is a even a 5 gallon tank suitable for a fish which is active and can actually get quite large? Just seems other species which get to their size generally need much a larger space. I know betta aren't big swimmers so I guess that means they need less room. I have mine in a 5g tank, but ~1/3 of the area is taken up by plants/wood so is unswimmable anyway. Anyone ever moved theirs to a larger tank and noticed changes in behaviour?

How do you prepare water for water changes?

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 05:39 PM PDT

I'm looking into setting up my first high-tech planted tank and I'm trying to understand water changes. I want to ensure my parameters are as stable as possible when I perform water changes. Is there an easy mode for ensuring the water I'm adding to the tank has the same parameters as what I'm removing from the tank?

Would it be easier to use R/O water and build custom parameters than try to acheive the parameters I'm hoping for out of my tap? What do you do to get the same PH, KH, GH?

Any advice would be appreciated. If you know of an article that explains preparing for a water change correctly, I'll gladly read it. I have found a lot of information on how to understand what the parameters mean, and not a lot on how to adjust accordingly. Thanks!
