What are the shiny scales on our blackmoor? The fin edge came off in the bag on the way home from petco.

UGF -or- in the beginning :)

years ago when I was a little kid, I won a little yellow fish at the fair and I was so proud of it, My dad got me a bowl and tossed in some marbles and an air stone and the fish went in that .. we fed it and did water changes faithfully.. some father daughter bonding you know .. it was pretty cool time spent .. anyways time pass's, I being a 7 year old think the fishy needed a friend and my dad agreed so off to s.s.kresskey store we went where they had goldfish for sale .. and the nice folks there talked my dad into a 10 gallon silver framed tank with a old fashioned box filter , and all the trimmings .. and 3 more fishies! all bright and pretty and finny .. a delight to the eyes of course .. My dad sweet talked my mom into having it in the living room so it coud be showed off and admired.. and so that happened .. it was an awesome summer.. So time pass's and I get older.. the fish became my dads activity I just watched as he did all the cool stuff .. but it was his hobby tbh.. Coupla fish died he bought a new one and it died .. ( damn tank was to small for 4 common comets right) so he talked to his buddy down the way who had a pond .. and the fish went to live there .. and suddenly they got huge !.. Now my dad was a courious guy and wanted that bright shiny tank set up in his living room.. so we got some guppies .. eehhh they weren't as cool as the goldfish were ) .. winter came and went and my dad was learning and studying about fish keeping .. .. come summer he had built a stand and acquired a bigger tank for that corner of the living room.. and this old dude he knew taught him about UGF and how to keep fish without a huge mess.. ( or marbles )and so things happened .. we got more goldfish, we spent time at the Shedd Aquariumn in The windy city . and fish keepers hearts bloomed .. we all loved it , but mostly my dad .. Anyways years passed the tank was pretty cool and the fish seemed to live a very long time.. when they got pretty big they went to the pond to live .. and dad would get more gold fish for the house fishtank.. all because he only used a undergravel filter and some common sense .. the tank was planted and kept nice .. and thats where I learned to love a ugf system ..
so that's my story.. whats your fish story?

40 gallon to 75 gallon swap help.

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 11:42 AM PDT

Hello all right now im going to be setting up my new 75 gallon tank today for my 4 fancy goldfish that are currently in a 40 gallon. They are still fairly small but I wanted to get this upgrade out of the way. Once everything is setup in the 75 gallon aquarium I was going to throw on my aquaclear 70 from my 40 gallon on the 75 gallon so it could start the bio filter in my new aquaclear 110 and after a month I will take off the aquaclear 70 leaving the the aquaclear 110 solo. Could I add my goldfish right away after I've acclimated them to the new water of course with the aquaclear 70 providing the bio filter in the new tank?

Surprise Rescue Goldfish. Any advise?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 05:04 PM PDT

So my boyfriend came home with three goldfish (about an inch long) because some people were being careless with them (in bags with an inch of water for many hours in direct sunlight on a hot day 🙄). I'm not very experienced, but I know the basics.

We immediately went to the pet store and got a 10G tank, filter, food, water conditioner, etc. just so they could get out of those nasty bags where they were no doubt running out of oxygen. I also put some live plants in there so they can hide/nibble. They are alert and swimming well now.

I'm very aware they will need a replacement tank soon, I was think of finding a 75G? Is that about right? I would appreciate any tips on brand of filter, food, conditioner, anything you can think of!!

Also, their fins are not looking too good at the moment, one in particular is worrisome. Is there anything I can or should do to help them recover? Is it an infection or just stress? Thanks for reading all the way through this!!

help! afraid I may kill my fish

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 02:11 PM PDT

hello! I recently used the tetra no more algae tabs on my 20 gallon tank. unfortunately I thought it was 30 and added 3 tabs instead of 2. I am afraid this may kill my fish and the tabs have dissolved so I do not know where to go from here or if I have caused my fish any harm.
