So I’ve noticed my cray is only active at night, so are they nocturnal or just prefer the dark?

Crayfish in North-Central Alabama

Hello all! I just had a few questions about crayfish in the central alabama region and how to go about catching some. My brother is starting a new aquarium and one of the things he really wants to put in it is a crayfish of some sort- he has done his research on how to take care of them, and now all that remains is to catch one! We have several creeks around here, and he has bought a trap. I have also seen a few of what I believe are their burrows in a field behind our church. So my questions are this- how exactly do you set a trap to catch crayfish, can you keep burrowing crayfish in a tank, and if you want to walk about flipping stones, how exactly would you do this? The last may seem like a stupid question, but I have walked along a few of the creek beds here in town and flipped many a rock only to not find anything at all underneath them. I just don't know if I am lifting the wrong rocks or if this just indicates there are none in our area. Thank you very much in advance for any help you can give!

TL;DR- This is in regards to crayfish in central alabama

  1. How do you set a trap in a creek?
  2. Can you put burrowing crayfish in a fish tank?
  3. How do you find crayfish in a creek by flipping stones? I have never seen one in my area under a rock I have flipped.
  4. Additional question not asked above- should I try putting the trap in a pond or would that not yield anything either?

Thanks again for all of your help!
