Had to Euthanize My Betta Fish Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:22 AM PDT My betta fish has been incredibly sick for the past 3 weeks. Tried increasing his water changes, gave him recommended medications, and frequently tested his water parameters. Nothing helped. The last week he got so bad that he spent each day on the bottom of the tank, laying flat or curled up in a weird position, breathing so heavily that his body would move with each breath. Last night had marked two weeks of him not eating or interacting at all. I believe he was suffering from severe fin rot and advanced velvet. I made the very, very difficult decision to euthanize him last night with clove oil. I couldn't bare to watch him suffer anymore, despite how desperately I didn't want to go through with something traumatic like that (mainly for someone sensitive like me). It was my first time euthanizing a fish before. I'm proud of myself for going through with it, and know that he's no longer suffering or in pain. But I wanted to share part of the experience that has me feeling most sad, in an effort to vent and hopefully relate to other people who may have not had the most peaceful experience with euthanizing a fish. Only encouraging responses please. So, I had to take him out of the tank and move him into a smaller container to do the clove oil, as most of you who have done the clove oil method should know. For almost a week, he lay motionless in his tank, but he mustered up the strength to keep frantically swimming away from the net and cup when I tried getting him. So now he's already stressed out (and me too). My mom happened to be with me at the time, and tried to get him out with the net. She did, but as she's lifting him out of the tank, I'm trying to tell her that he was hanging out of the net, not fully inside of it. Still not realizing what I'm saying, she tries putting the net in the container, and his body/head was pressing up against the side of the container. I'm yelling at her now and then somehow he jumped out of the net and onto my desk. I then had a really hard time picking him back up from my desk. It was completely and utterly traumatic and now that's all I can think about. I wanted so desperately for his last moments to be as stress-free as possible, and I'm sad I wasn't able to give him that in it's entirety. He did seem to go peacefully with the clove oil, but I'm still irked by the experience as a whole. Thank you for listening. I loved him dearly and I miss him already. :( [link] [comments] | ||
