Researching, planning to get a lotl or 2

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 10:04 AM PDT

I'm still researching, but I'm pretty sure I want an axolotl. I already have a 28 gallon bowfront tank and stand. I'd like to make the habitat look natural, with live plants, but since lotls don't like light, how can i do that? I already have a large tank set up with fish and turtles, so I can use that water to help cycle the tank. In the summer, our indoor temps sometimes get up to around 80. Will I be able to get by with doing the frozen water bottle thing for a few months? I'd like to get everything set up so that it will be fairly low-maintenance. I'm prepared to do water changes weekly. Any sites or books I should check out? Also, no lotls available near me, as far as i know, so may have to order online. I'd kinda like to have 2, but I think i may not have quite enough room, and I don't want them to breed! I did see some about 90 miles away, and they were $100 each. Also didn't look all that healthy. :(

Thanks

Help with cycling!

My tank finish cycling before I went on a 3 day trip. I dosed the tank with ammonia before going on the trip to keep the bacteria alive while I was gone. Then when I came back I tested it and it ran high so I didn't add any ammonia. The 2nd day back the ammonia reading was low so I added more. Ever since then my ammonia has been super high. I've tested several times and the results were the same. Nitrates and nitrites are good. I need to get the tank squared away because I'm going on another trip in two weeks for work.
