Do live snails smell at all?

I have a super large (golf ball size) mystery snail. So I noticed my mystery snail hadn't moved around today so I wanted to check if it was dead. I've been told to do the sniff test. It smells funky (a bit fishy), but definitely not at terrible as people say. Is it possible I caught it in the early stages of it dying? Or could it still be alive?

I also checked its trapdoor. It's doesn't close when I pull it a bit, but it also doesn't fall out. Also good to note that this little guy is pretty weird and will lay outside of its shell without moving around at all for hours at a time.

Any other good tests to check if its dead?

Does anyone else have nerites that seem to want to be anywhere but in the aquarium? I've got three nerites and everytime I lift the hood to do a water change I have to pick one off the hood or out of the filter canister while fighting the other two to keep them in the tank while I change water! They seem otherwise happy and healthy and my tank parameters are good so it's just one of those weird things I was wondering if anyone else had experienced. If you have, how do you keep them in the water to do tank maintenance with the lid off???

Help figuring out some weird issues

Maybe they're not issues afterall who knows. hey friends, we have a heavily planted 30 gallon breeder tank with drift wood and java moss stocked with:

  • bladder snails
  • 2 nerite snails (Jerry & Gary)
  • 3 small ramshorn snails
  • 5 amano shrimp
  • 6 adult red/blue/yellow shrimp
  • 5-ish baby red shrimp
  • 12-ish baby blue shrimp
  • 10 platies
  • 10 cardinal tetras

 

Here's the situation:

  • -Not seeing nerite snail except when he's trying to crawl out of the tank.
  • -ramshorn snails seemed to have disappeared
  • -the bladder snails aren't getting any bigger
  • -had 3 shrimp deaths
  • -shrimp are definitely molting
  • -of the 12 baby blues we added, we only see about 2 at a time
  • -we see the 5 baby reds that were born in the tank, they seem to be doing fine
  • -the amanos are doing fine

 

Circumstances:

  • -tested the water many times, everything checks out within normal range
  • -do regular gravel vac and water changes--once a week

 

Anything stand out? I want to add more snails & shrimp, think it's safe?

My zebra nerite snail has a chipped shell that seems really dark and I’m really worried will he be ok?
