An act of kindness from my LFS!

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:58 PM PDT

Today, I went to my LFS. The employee recognized me as i went there to buy my first fish, tank etc. She asked me what happened to my original fish, i told her they unfortunately passed due to my errors, and a very sad case of ammonia poisoning. I've learned from said mistakes and I now have a healthy tank. Her, knowing I had a 10 gallon and a love for guppies, gave me two koi guppies today, for the price of their bloodworms. It was such a kind gesture, and I couldn't help but shed a tear. Life has been beating me up recently. I recently lost my grandma, and this hobby has helped me cope with that. It made me so happy to have not one but two additions to my tank. They're so pretty and just compliment their brothers so well!!

Accidentally injured a fish during netting. Would like some advice on how to proceed.

Posted: 13 Apr 2019 05:44 AM PDT

Last night I was transferring a school of black neon tetras from quarantine to the main tank. While netting, the fish I was trying to catch zigged when I thought it was zagging and I accidentally squished its body between the net and the glass for a moment. It immediately went pale, gills flared out, and started floating. I was very upset because I've been keeping fish for several years and have never had this happen before. I thought I had broken its spine and killed it instantly.

I netted the rest of the school and transferred them to the show tank to keep them from panicking. I went back to net what I thought was the dead fish and noticed its gills were moving. I left the room to get the euthanasia supplies, and when I went to go net the fish, it started swimming again. All fins were working normally, but the fish was yawing back and forth really dramatically as it swam.

I decided to give the fish a little longer to recover, to see if the swimming was a last-minute burst due to shock, or if I had maybe just stunned it badly. I didn't want the fish to suffer in pain, but I also didn't want to euthanize it unnessecarily. After about 15-20 minutes, there was still some yawing, but the fish could hold itself steady in the water and was no longer gilling rapidly. Some color had returned as well and it did not appear to be in significant pain.

I wound up leaving the fish in quarantine overnight with the lights off to reduce stress. Color is about normal, all fins are still moving normally. The fish is able to swim more or less normally, with some yawing at higher speeds, but does rest in the water with its head at a downward angle (about 30 degrees at its worst). It was able to catch and eat the little bit of food I put in the tank. It is not hiding except for when I approach the tank (I don't blame it in the slightest). If I had to guess, I would say the fish possibly sustained a swim bladder injury during the netting?

I'm not sure whether this is something I should give some more recovery time to (it's been about 14 hours), or if this is worse than I think it is. I'm also unsure whether to leave it in quarantine for a few more days, or to allow it into the main tank once it seems to be alright. I know being alone is stressful for a schooling fish, but I also don't want to risk harassment in the main tank.

My first instinct is to leave it in quarantine for another day or so and proceed from there, but I'd like some advice.
