Announcing r/Awwquariums - A place for all your cute aquarium shots!

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:08 AM PDT

Hello everyone!

Today we introduce to you r/Awwquariums, a subreddit made for all your cute aquarium pictures (and videos of course). Certain things that would be removed under rule 5 like pets and humans in the shot on r/Aquariums, and didn't have a subreddit dedicated to these pictures, now have a place to go to.

We've noticed that redirecting memes to r/AquariumMemes and shitty aquariums to r/ShittyAquariums really increased the quality of this subreddit while still having an alternative subreddit that is active. At this moment in time r/AquariumMemes has 4.5k subs and 18k subs. Even though there's a significant sub gap, the activity levels are relatively the same.

This doesn't mean that posts violating our rule 5 are the only allowed posts on r/Awwquariums. Any cute picture that you have of your fish or other aquatic critter is also allowed and very much welcomed!

We hope that you guys like this new subreddit and if you have any remarks or advice, please let us know.

This gorgeous girl is swimming in the great aquarium in the sky as of yesterday. Here's my favorite gif of her. She was over 10 years old and just shy of 9".

Shrimp: The majestic helicopters of the freshwater tank coming into land after a successful flight

Update: filled the tank now and I took your advice, it would be cruel to put a Betta in such a small tank. I filled it with some cichlids I had lying around. Top cabinets to be installed soon to hide the lights.

Massive roots! Haven’t removed these plants in a year. How exciting when they make new plants with the same roots!! Time to upkeep

Had to Euthanize My Betta Last Night

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:12 AM PDT

My betta fish has been incredibly sick for the past 3 weeks. Tried increasing his water changes, gave him recommended medications, and frequently tested his water parameters. Nothing helped. The last week he got so bad that he spent each day on the bottom of the tank, laying flat or curled up in a weird position, breathing so heavily that his body would move with each breath. Last night had marked two weeks of him not eating or interacting at all. I believe he was suffering from severe fin rot and advanced velvet.

I made the very, very difficult decision to euthanize him last night with clove oil. I couldn't bare to watch him suffer anymore, despite how desperately I didn't want to go through with something traumatic like that (mainly for someone sensitive like me). It was my first time euthanizing a fish before.

I'm proud of myself for going through with it, and know that he's no longer suffering or in pain. But I wanted to share part of the experience that has me feeling most sad, in an effort to vent and hopefully relate to other people who may have not had the most peaceful experience with euthanizing a fish. Only encouraging responses please.

So, I had to take him out of the tank and move him into a smaller container to do the clove oil, as most of you who have done the clove oil method should know. For almost a week, he lay motionless in his tank, but he mustered up the strength to keep frantically swimming away from the net and cup when I tried getting him. So now he's already stressed out (and me too). My mom was with me at the time and tried to get him out with the net. She did, but as she's lifting him out of the tank, I'm trying to tell her that he was hanging out of the net, not fully inside of it. Still not realizing what I'm saying, she tries putting the net in the container, and his body/head was pressing up against the side of the container. I'm yelling at her now and then somehow he jumped out of the net and onto my desk. I then had a really hard time picking him back up from my desk. It was completely and utterly traumatic and now that's all I can think about.

I wanted so desperately for his last moments to be as stress-free as possible, and I'm sad I wasn't able to give him that in it's entirety. He did seem to go peacefully with the clove oil, but I'm still irked by the experience as a whole.

Thank you for listening. I loved him dearly and I miss him already. :(
