CRS/CBS tank not cycled after 4 1/2 months? Please help.. i dont know what to do anymore...

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 04:49 PM PDT

Sorry for the long post, I wanna make things as detailed as possible.

So, i've been really struggling with this tank and just cant figure it out. Reddit has been really awesome when i started with this hobby, so i figured some of you guys could offer me some help :(

On the 13th o november i set up a 10g tank using ada amazonia soil, a mini canister filter rated for 380 liters/hour with lots of bio media in it (wouldnt know the conversion to GPH, sorry) + sponge filter hooked on an air pump. Flooded the tank, saw ammonia spike immediatly, ph dropped to upper 5s/low 6s and I just let nature take her course.

During the first seven weeks i barely noticed nitrite, which peaked at 2ppm the most, then plummeted and never seen a trace of it ever since. Nitrites got to 25ppm or so and ammonia was at 0.25. All this happened after the course of these 7 weeks along with some water changes to clear things up in the tank (ADA amazonia is quite messy, I discovered).

Once it reached 0.25 I added a mystery snail to keep the cycle going while the tank matured a little bit more. A month later, on the 22nd of february, ammonia got to unoticable levels (couldnt say if there was a green tint or not upon testing, even comparing againat tap water) I finally added 6 CBS shrimps. They did GREAT for the first couple of weeks, then they started slowly dying. Upon the first death, I tested the water and got 2ppm ammonia and +-50ppm nitrates. This made me panic, obviously, so i put the crystal shrimp in my neo tank just until I could figure things out.

With an empty tank, i did tons of water changes, and i do mean TONS. First a 90% water change brought nitrates to zero, but barely made a dent in ammonia. I only managed to get ammonia to 0.25ppm after more than a week of daily 80-90% water and i just couldnt get it any lower... I thought this was weird because I always thought the tank was cycled! Shouldnt need all this to get rid of 2ppm ammonia, right?

So, i thought something was wrong with my filtering. Took the sponge filter, placed it in a spare tank with declor. tap, added ammonia and let it run. To my surprise, the filter haddent consumed ANY of the 2ppm i've added to the spare tank, making me believe i had no bio filtration going on at all!! Of course, the spare tank had kh from tap which made me realise that the buffering capability of ada amazonia was probably not the issue since it does remove any KH.

So, now i've still got 25-50 ppm ammonia in that tank, doesnt lower despite adding bacteria or doing water changes. Last time i did a water change, ammo went to 0 - 0.10 so i added some ottos and one neo shrimp. Two hours later, ammo was at 0.50 again, i have the impression that it raises almost instantly. I have no clue about whats going on.

Nothing rotting in the tank, searched everywhere. I never got the chance to feed the shrimp while they were in the tank since there were so few of them, fed Bacter AE only once by dipping the tip of a toothpick in the powder and placing it in front of the spray bar (doubt this could of caused all this ammonia). No chance its ammonia in tap water because i use RO/DI water remineralized with SSGH+.

I've also tried some bacteria products like Seachem Stability and Mosura's BT-9, none seemed to work... ammonia just wont go to zero! If I test for ammonia, the best i see is a greenish yellow, obviously not zero... but mostly its at 0.25 -0.50.

Please, kind people of reddit, help me.. even my fish store guy thinks im a nuisance by now.. got no friends in the hobby to help me out and i really love these critters, i wish i could give them a great home :(

Could it be the buffering capabilities of the soil that is hindering my cycle? Could it be possible that the substrate is still leeching ammonia even after 4 months?

I know KH should be zero on ada amazonia tanks because of the buffering capacity of the soil, but should i be adding some carbonates? I dont wanna hinder the usage of the soil in the future, since it is VERY expensive here where i live (Brazil). I tried doing some WC's using tap since our water is not very hard (7.2ph 3kh 0gh) but no changes at all, ammonia still present, as always :(

Tank params are as of now PH: 6.5 KH: 0 GH: 5 TDS: 130 Temp: 24 C Ammonia: 0.25 -0.50 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0 (havent seen nitrates in a while, guessing its because of the amount of water changes i've been doing lately)

Use RO/DI water remineralized with SSGH+

Tank has some java moss, anubia barteri and 10 stalks of hygrophila var. sunset. About 40% of the substrate has plants. Not a jungle, but not without plants either.

I really appreciate your guys' patience and inputs.

How do I care for baby shrimp?

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 03:03 PM PDT

I had 2 Amano shrimp with my Betta, but decided to separate them into their own tanks. I bought 12 Cherry Shrimp about a month ago to go in with the Amanos and they've seemed to have gotten on nicely.

I noticed a few baby shrimp about 3 weeks ago, and counted 14 new shrimp in a 8 gallon tank (so 12 adult cherry, 14 baby cherry, 2 amanos). I now have approximately 72 as far as I can count (took me longer than I'm willing to admit). I must have bought a few pregnant ones or something.

How do I care for these?

How much more food should I be putting in? Do they eat the same food?

When are they safe to be moved elsewhere?

Do I need to make any changes to the environment? They currently have a bit of drift wood, moss, and then the usual heater and sponge filter.

Looking at setting up a shrimp tank for the first time and was wondering if quartz would be a safe decoration to use in it?
