Little ones on the way...

Caught one of my Black Roses in juuuust the right light and found out she isn’t so black after all! Love the hints of color in these little guys.

The gang’s all here

Look at this little guy, figuring stuff out and making smart decisions. Considering they only just figured out two days ago that there's more food when you don't hide under a rock for 4 months...

Caridina tips infographic

Hey shrimpkeepers!

I made an infographic for caridina tips inspired by the one created by u/chaotemagick for neocaridina. I hope you like it!

What’s a cool type of (very small) shrimp that isn’t super expensive?

Mixing Inert and Active substrate for caradina tank

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 07:22 PM PDT

I was thinking about adding a long lasting neutral substrate such as florurite or black gravel for my aquarium floor. Then I plan have several pots with active substrate such as ada amazonia and fluval with plants, this is so I can replace them when they get old.

Would this be a good strategy to breed caradinas in?

Can’t seem to find my shrimp lol.

I acclimated 11 blue dreams last Wednesday. Drip acclimated for an hour and then set them free into the tank. The tank is decently planted tank with driftwood and some rocks etc. I noticed 1 of them died which I figured would happen anyways. But now I can't seem to find most of them. I can find 3 max at a time. And the other 7 are either dead or ready good hiders. Is this pretty common? I look all over my tank with my phone flashlight looking for them.

RCS keep dying... Any suggestions?

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 05:01 PM PDT

I seem to always have issues raising RCS. I had hoped that moving to an area with harder water would have helped but alas. 3 year old lightly planted 5 gallon tank with the following parameters:

  • Ammonia 0

  • Nitrites 0

  • Nitrates 40 (yeah I know yikes)

  • gh 9

  • kh 4

  • ph 7.4

It's been a month or two since I started another attempt at keeping them. All seemed well until I started having deaths. Seems like molting issues (white ring of death). Tested my water and found the above parameters. Gh and kh seem fine so I have no idea why they're having molting issues.

Since nitrates are high, I increased water changes to 20% 2x a week and slowly adding about 10% of water back daily in between to prevent params from swinging too much. But the number of deaths ended up increasing (all with molting issues). I've stopped and gone back to weekly 20% water changes starting today.

I don't know what to do at this point. Is it possibly a diet issue? I only had a handful of them so I never bothered feeding them. My tank has a good amount of biofilm and algae. Do I need to supplement? Is it the nitrates? But water changes seem to be doing more harm at this point. I'm going to buy some floaters on my next day off to help with that instead.

On an interesting note, the lone survivor from my previous attempt is still alive. She was the offspring of the batch I bought from the store and survived the move.

How often should I do water changes for a shrimp only tank?

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 10:55 AM PDT

I have a shrimp only tank with 8-10 blue dreams in it(don't know exact number they're good at hiding). I have a sponge filter currently in it. 10 gallon and planted.

How often should I be doing water changes?

Ok guys I’ve recently gotten a small female betta will it be okay with red Cherry’s? Including babies?

Just noticed one of my Black Roses with a defined lighter stripe going all the way down her body. Should I be worried?

Is my tank ready for shrimp yet?

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 02:13 PM PDT

I have researched to the point of numbness and I can't tell if my tank is ready for shrimp based on my tank's testing results and all the various care sheets. Since you guys know this stuff forwards and backwards, can you guys please glance at this and let me know what I need to change and what shrimp would work best in this tank?

Here's the setup:

Fully cycled 5-gallon tank (tall, 9.7"x 9.7" footprint)

Baffled HOB for 10 gallon, with intake filter

50w preset (to 78F) heater

Ammonia: 0

Nitrites: 0

Nitrates: 5

TDS: 146

GH: 4 drops

KH: one drop

Ph: 6.6

SUBSTRATE: 75% SeaChem Florite Black and 25% Fluval Stratum

SCAPE: Six black/grey river rocks

PLANTS: Red root floaters, java moss, Christmas moss, Amazon Sword, moneywort, anubias, 6 'moss' balls

ADDITIVES: Prime, API root tabs (one), TriveS

No snails or other animals (Betta was moved to the fully planted 20g-long tank)
