Male or female? How do you cull male cherry shrimps?

New to shrimp: I want to make sure I’m giving them the best life, so I have some questions!

Hi! My mom bought me a desktop tank a few months ago, and I knew it wasn't big enough for fish. I did some research on animals that can live in smaller tanks, and I discovered shrimp! I immediately fell in love, and set out to get some of my own. I've never had my own aquarium before, so I have no experience with how often to change the water, how to test it, etc. I found the temperature they needed, and it's the same temperature I keep my room, so I just had a little basic setup with the tank and a small filter. The way it was set up didn't really work though, and even though I started out with 4 I ended up with just one. The other three kind of just disappeared? I don't really know what happened, because there were no traces of them ever being in there...

Since the setup obviously wasn't working out, I got a new aquarium/filter to transfer my remaining shrimpy boy to. I set it up about a week ago, and it seems to be a much better environment for him. About 3 days ago, I went to the pet store and got him two new buddies (the last ones they had in stock). I assimilated them to the tank, and it all seemed to be going well!

I hadn't gotten rid of the old tank yet. Part of me was worried there might be one of the shrimp who had disappeared hiding in there somewhere, so the tank was still about half full with some gravel in there. I didn't really think there was anything in there, but I didn't have the heart to empty it just yet. But this morning, my mom ran in excitedly and said there were baby shrimp in the tank!! I was pretty confused, because I didn't know they had even laid eggs, or even which ones were male or female. But I went in, and sure enough there were quite a few little shrimplets.

At this point..I don't really know what to do!! I don't know how to take care of the babies, because I didn't really think of the possibility of them breeding. They're still in the separate tank. I'm worried my main tank won't even have enough room for them all because I can't tell how many babies there are (they're really small and blend in)! I want to get a bigger tank to keep them all in, but I'll have to see if I can find one with my budget. If not, I don't want to overcrowd them and have them die, but I also don't know what to do with them :( I'm really excited to have the shrimplets, but I'm so worried I won't raise them right!!! I don't want any more shrimp to disappear. I feel really bad about the ones who already did, and I want to learn from my mistakes.

A few other random things that might be important: I don't know what breed of shrimp they are. They look like cherry shrimp to me, but the pet store just had them labeled something like "assorted" or "mystery". I don't know how to tell for sure. Also, I've noticed some stuff on the gravel that looks like clearish white algae. I researched it online and it appears to be harmless, but I'm gonna clean the tank out ASAP just to be safe. I just want to make sure it's nothing super serious...everything I read online said it's just bacteria that the shrimp can eat but I read something that said the green fungal disease that kills the shrimp can be related to "colorless algae" and I don't know how they're connected!

I know this post is super long, I'm sorry. I feel guilty that I didn't do enough research on them initially, and I'm determined to fix my mistake. I don't want to be an irresponsible pet owner! I'm grateful for any advice I can get!

I have a small tank with 6 blue velvet shrimp with 5 neon tetras how likely is it that the colony with grow? Should I be worried about the teras eating all the baby shrimp before they can grow.(I'm planning on buying the last of the blue velvets from my local store which only has maybe about 2-4 left)

Predators?

I was wondering: are there any species of shrimps that are predators and that would attack smaller animals?

Are the Aqueon QuietFlow Shrimp filters good?

Posted: 08 Mar 2019 07:26 PM PST

I've been on a hunt for a good filter for a new 10 gallon tank, and found this filter on Petco's website. It comes in two sizes, one for 10g and one for 20g. So far it seems really good but I haven't been able to find reviews on it.

My question is, has anyone used it? Is it good for a tank that might have some very tiny inverts besides shrimp?

I have a 5gal that doesn't have a filter or vertebrates, just some snails, copepods and daphnia. I would like to move them to the new tank as soon as I get the thing set up properly. They're really lovely hitchhikers and I'd be sad to lose them in the 10gal due to the filter.

The 10g isn't set up yet. So far I intend to add some shrimp, wild guppies and perhaps a few corydoras, since I don't want anything that has a huge bio load. First step is, of course, to decide on the filter.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
